Not worth the effort

I currently own a Nebula Apollo projector. It works great, it’s only 200 lumen. I wanted something a bit brighter and still portable, but didn’t want to pay $500 to get it. Saw this projector. The description ticks all the boxes: cost less, hi resolution, portable, auto focus, auto keystone, decent sound. I don’t care about the “smart” aspect. I wasn’t planning to connect it to WiFi, I have an AppleTV 4k and a Bluray player to watch videos. Amazon shipped it quickly and without damage. First impressions upon opening the box was that both the remote and project felt plasticky. Yes, its housing is plastic, but it’s the cheap kind that feels brittle. Fit and finish was ok though. Plugged it in and powered it on. It takes about 30 seconds for it to boot up, then another 10 seconds for focus and keystone adjustments. I sat it on the floor and angled up about 30 degrees, something my Nebula has no problem with. This projector never could figure out how to project at the angle. Focus was fine, but the keystone adjustment in small misshapen trapezoids that I had to manually adjust, but still couldn’t get right. I move the projector off the floor and the keystone adjustment worked better. That was a red flag. The second red flag has to do with connecting HDMI. You have to go through the settings menu every time! The default home screen has all the major streaming apps, but no way to tap other input sources easily. The final red flag for me was sound, or rather the lack of it. Try as I might, I could not get sound to play consistently from my AppleTV. Checked all connections to no avail. The included manual was no help and there’s very little options in the settings menu. In fact, the settings menu offers no adjustments for brightness, color or other normal settings, you’re stuck with whatever it’s set at out of the box. After futzing with it for about 2 hours, I gave up and requested a refund. Just wasn’t worth the effort. I’m being generous with the 2 stars.
