A Nostalgic Time Machine in a Steelbook Suit
By Nicholas T. on Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2025
If you're a longtime gaming fan or just curious about where it all began, Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration – Expanded Steelbook Edition on the Switch is a love letter you don’t want to miss. This isn’t just a collection—it’s an interactive documentary, museum exhibit, and playable history lesson all rolled into one sleek, collector-worthy package. The moment I started flipping through the interactive timeline, I was hooked. It's more than just game after game (though the 140+ titles are impressive in their own right). You get to dive deep into the stories, creators, and pivotal moments that helped shape the video game world we know today. The behind-the-scenes content and rare archival footage add real weight and emotional depth—it’s clear this was made with heart and serious attention to detail. Playing through games across seven different Atari platforms—from arcade to the Jaguar—is both nostalgic and eye-opening. Some of these games haven’t been available in decades, and the quality-of-life upgrades (like save states and modern display options) make them way more approachable. The inclusion of unreleased prototypes and rare finds adds that thrill of discovery that hardcore fans will really appreciate. And let’s not overlook the steelbook—it’s beautifully done and gives that premium, collector’s feel. This edition really earns its "expanded" title, especially with the exclusive interviews and newly added content that fleshes out the broader history, including nods to Mattel’s Intellivision and Stern Electronics. Whether you’re reliving your childhood or discovering the roots of gaming for the first time, this is a standout celebration that respects and honors the Atari legacy.

It is pretty good, but far from perfect.
By Derek buckler on Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024
They removed copyrighted music from Tempest 2000, unacceptable. Which has fantastic music, not the same now. And where is Pitfall 1 &2? Or more obscure games like Frostbite? (A personal favorite of mine growing up on the Atari 2600) So this collection could be a whole lot better. is it good? Sure, but it's not great
