Surprisingly fun; one of the best I've played this year

This game is such a gem. The basic concept is that you enter a city and do not know the language. Each sign you try to read or person you try to talk to offers clues as to what words are, and you use a journal to jot down your ideas about what words mean. As you progress through the level, you solve puzzles that not only teach you words in the language but also advance you in the game. Once you beat a level, you move on to a new level with a new language and new challenges.I loved that it is puzzle-based; it is just hard enough to make you think, but not so hard that it's impossible or (too) frustrating. It reminded me of playing Majora's Mask when you had to figure out all of the clues to get the masks or how to manipulate the temples -- except Chants of Sennaar doesn't have any battles. Additionally, the art is beautiful, the gameplay is smooth, and the music is nice.If you like games like Professor Layton or Zelda or if you like puzzles, give this game a try. It was a wonderful surprise -- an all-around beautiful game.

Nephew thinks it's ok. Not great overall though.
