Great Quality JRPG Remake with a Classic SMT Story
By Baloptimus on Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a definitive edition of the original SMT V, offering an enhanced storyline, additional demons, and improved gameplay mechanics. If you’ve played the Persona series but never delved into SMT, expect a darker, more challenging experience with turn-based combat that rewards strategy. The Press Turn system makes battles engaging, and the demon fusion mechanics allow for deep customization. The Steelbook edition adds a nice collector’s touch, and the game runs smoothly on the Switch. Whether you're new to the series or a long-time fan, this is a fantastic RPG that shouldn’t be missed.

Worst story of the series.

My first copy came in defective but my second game is great. Been playing this on my series S and dabbled in the switch version last night to see the differences. While it's a downgrade I graphics and frame rate it's way better than the vanilla version and mostly stays at its 30fps and resolution. The thing that gets me is the new story Cannon of Vengeance. It's a train wreck. This includes the original story as well so you are getting two campaigns in one. My problem is that the story makes NO SENSE at all. It is all over the place and it takes you out of the game. The gameplay is fun and addicting but you are better off thinking you're a lone wolf taking doing mythological beings of different cultures than investing yourself into the train wreck of discombobulated cut scenes. I'm at the last act and I have yelled at my TV like a madman. It's like they hired different writers for every cut scene they had. SMT IV and IV:A are the best in story telling even though there is some things on those that make no sense. Strange Journey Redux is on that list of great writing to. Go into the game with a Dark Souls mindset and dig into lore. Ignore the story and get ready to get your butt handed to you.
