Best budget friendly 4K Dolby Vision projector on the market by a mile!
By Travis on Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025
I’ll preface this review by saying that this projector saved me from abandoning the niche of using projectors in my home theater setup. Due to the larger TVs coming out with Dolby Vision and being affordable, I started to lean towards a non-projector setup. I am a bit of a projector nut; I have always enjoyed the technology and riding along with it as it advanced year after year. I like trying and buying the latest and greatest (budget in mind of course). This projector checked off two big boxes for me, that being 4K and Dolby vision. My previous projector was a high-end 1080p projector that left some big shoes to fill in terms of longevity and quality. I held off writing the review for this projector because I wanted to wait and ingest all its pros and cons so I can unbiasedly share with anyone who is thinking about getting a projector like this. To share some details on my setup, I have this projector coupled with a Denon x3700h, Nvidia Shield Pro, PS5, and an Apple TV 4K. The setup of the projector was straight forward enough for me. I had a universal ceiling mount already installed and it was just a matter of adding the additional leg back on to accommodate the four padded screws on the bottom of the projector. Once the mounting was squared away, it was time for the adjustments to make the screen perfect. 13’ throw, about a 120” projection to a basic motorized projector screen. To my surprise, the projector’s auto-adjustment and auto-focus kicked in. The auto-adjustment did an okay job, it made the projection way oversized, and I had to manually adjust the size down which wasn’t a big deal. The auto-focus worked flawlessly and still works flawlessly (almost year in review). You’ll initially have to go in and get used to all of the settings, like reviewing the HDR settings and “Enhanced” options. So, to now transition into the projector’s performance and be succinct on the topic I’ll share some big things I’ve noticed with this projector based on what I find to be important. Out of the gate, the important things: Dolby Vision looks amazing on this projector. If you pair it with The Apple TV 4K you will be in love with it and start preferring this setup. I am not a big Apple TV guy, but my goodness, whatever they did with this device makes everything pop. HDR content is not very impressive. I find myself trying to avoid any movie that is HDR, HDR10 because of this issue. To make it worthwhile, you must use “HDR day” and play with the brightness and contrast to find a sweet spot for yourself. SDR looks great. A lot of the 4K content with no HDR, playing on the Apple TV 4K looks pretty good. 1080p content looks good too. I have played 1080p content from all of the streaming platforms and Blu-rays and I was pretty satisfied with the outcome. Obviously, for Blu-rays it depends on the transfer. Gaming mode is acceptable. I have gamed on the projector countless times and never ran into any issues with latency. In fact, the game mode set to “automatic” has been the key. I can recall a time where I started gaming online and immediately noticed latency, went into the projector settings, and realized I turned off “automatic game mode.” I fixed this mess up and the latency was gone. So on to some cons or things to be aware of with the projector… A phantom “power on” issue (shown in video). I will come down into my theater room in the morning and find my projector to be on. If you try to turn the power off by remote control or power button it will not respond. The only solution to this issue that I have found was to unplug the projector from the outlet. The issue with this approach, is sometimes it undoes the screen adjustments I have done for my projector screen. HDR brightness. As previously touched on, it is quite frankly, too dark. It takes an exhausting amount of effort to get it to where you’d want it to be, and it still isn’t perfect. The initial setup and figuring out the positioning of the projector could be a pain. I had a universal ceiling mount that hooked up to without issue but for whatever reason, the projector could not be appropriately adjusted, and I had to abandon the ceiling mount in favor of a wall mounted setup. It was strange because my 1080p projector required almost no adjustment. Total head scratcher. You need to be mindful of refresh rates. I have a multi-monitor setup on my Denon x3700h, monitor 1 going to a 65” OLED, and monitor 2 going to this projector. Sometimes on the OLED I’ll play content in 30hz, 60hz, 120hz etc. A few times I just plum forgot I toyed with the refresh rate (I think the projector doesn’t like 30hz) and the projector would flash repeatedly. Overall, this review is getting lengthy, but I felt it was necessary to cover the hot button things that I have experienced in the last (almost) year in review. This projector is awesome, and I do not regret the purchase at all. I also had a pleasant experience interacting with customer support on some guidance I needed with the projector setup. I included some pics that will probably not do the projector justice in terms of displaying its clarity but figured it was worth sharing. All pics were taken while Dolby Vision was enabled. Enjoy!

Defective Hisense Projector: Frustrating Support and No Refund After Two Weeks of Escalations
By Hmglo on Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024
**UPDATED REVIEW** BLUF: The Hisense projector is defective, and after two weeks, Hisense has failed to fix the issues and twice refused to issue a refund. We’ve faced three major audio problems with our Hisense projector. Despite contacting customer support, Hisense has been unhelpful, passing us between different departments ("Tier 1," "Tier 2," and "Back End Team"), all of which have failed to diagnose or fix the issue. They still refuse to issue a refund for this clearly defective product. From the start, the projector had audio problems with our setup, which included a Sonos ARC soundbar and two Sonos One SL speakers. There was no sound from the projector's streaming apps, and screen casting didn’t work. We confirmed with Sonos that their equipment wasn’t the problem, so we hired an AV company, which spent four hours diagnosing the issue. They found three critical flaws in the Hisense projector: 1. The audio return doesn’t work with Hisense apps or streaming content, only with other inputs (e.g. DVD player) 2. The projector doesn’t support screen casting. 3. The default audio settings revert to "device only" each time it's turned on, requiring a manual reset to eARC. The AV company contacted Hisense, which resulted in endless escalations and failed troubleshooting attempts. Hisense promised to send a prepaid shipping label so I could send the projector to the Hisense tech team in Georgia for further diagnostics, but after over a week and multiple follow-ups, they admitted they couldn't send the label because the product was sold by a third party ("HOORAY INTERNATIONAL"), not directly by Hisense. This led to yet another escalation to the "Back End Team," with no resolution in sight. Despite multiple requests for a refund, Hisense refuses, insisting on further investigation. *Take note* that the way the product is listed, it appears (deceivingly, in my opinion) that it is sold by Hisense, but it is not. This projector is defective, and Hisense's support has been frustratingly ineffective. Avoid this product. If this issue isn't resolved promptly, I plan to escalate my complaint beyond Hisense customer support. I'll pursue other avenues, including filing complaints with consumer protection agencies and sharing my experience on consumer review platforms. Hisense needs to take responsibility for this defective product. **Original Review** I just want to be an encouragement for anyone out there who isn't the super tech-savvy type. I want to be the one person to say I tried and failed a LOT to get the image properly set up on our screen. I was so frustrated that I was about to return it. Take heart. I put some tips below. We bought three projectors to try before we decided on this one. Sharp image, bright colors. We have a white screen, not the fancy ALR kind. Yes, ambient light greatly affects image quality but so it goes. This was the only DLP projector we tried. The other two were LCD. The Hisense (and all DLP projectors, so I hear) requires mounting across from the screen either at the *bottom* of the screen or at the *top*. It *cannot* go in the middle, directly across from the screen - the image will never align. Trust me - we tried. Before giving mounting tips, I will say that we made sure the projector's throw ratio was correct for our space (throw ratio = distance:image width). So, with the many failures in setting up the projector, we were confident it *should* work because the throw distance was correct. If you choose to mount the projector across from the screen at the bottom, the projector will be only a few feet off the ground and, in our experience, will obstruct something - the couch, your view - or create a tripping hazard. I'm not sure how other people set it up this way. We chose to mount it at the top so it was out of the way. A few things to note if you want to mount the projector across from the screen at the top (like we did): - You must change this in the projector settings ("ceiling") - this will cause an upside-down image - You must flip the projector upside down to correct the image - At this point, you can hang the projector from the ceiling (upside down) OR, if you want to avoid the hassle of a ceiling-mount like we did, you can mount the projector on a floating shelf located near the top of the wall (where the top point of your screen is). - Remember that the projector is upside down. So, if it's resting on a shelf, there are some buttons that will get pushed in if the projector rests on its "head". - To fix this issue, we placed four furniture pads on each corner of the projector. This provided a soft, slight elevation for the projector, giving appropriate clearance to the buttons. Also allows air circulation. See photo. I hope this review helps someone else set up this projector.
