Hard to beat for a bulb camera
By Samwise on Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2023
I recently purchased the LaView 4MP Bulb Security Camera (2-pack) and I have to say, I’ve been impressed. The 355-degree view combined with 360-degree swivel provides all the flexibility I need, allowing me to monitor large areas of both the front and back yard. The security camera is wireless, and simply screws into an existing standard light fixture, making it super easy to install and use. It does require you to leave the light fixture turned on to provide continuous power to the camera, but that just makes sense and it doesn’t seem to use much electricity. Just note, you may need a socket extender if the light fixture covers any part of the camera lens as that will negatively impact the infrared night vision, even if it’s just clear glass. But that was not a big deal as extenders can be purchases from Amazon at a reasonable price. One of the things that impressed me the most is the wide angle and clarity of the 4MP camera. It provides impressive full-color images during the day and at night, it can intelligently (or you can manually) switch between infrared or starlight color mode which makes it almost look like it’s still daytime outdoors. One quick thought on this point: For a bulb camera, don’t expect to get iPhone quality images; that’s not the purpose of this product. As a security camera, the goal is to capture the largest area possible with enough detail to be aware of what is taking place in your surroundings and this product delivers that in spades. The motion detection feature is well implemented. The sensitivity can be set to the appropriate level to prevent false positives or constant alerts in high traffic areas, and the human movement detection setting is fairly accurate and further helps cut down on false alarms. It’s fun watching this little camera track a person such as a delivery driver as they walk up to the front door and drop off a package. The camera actually rotates and pivots to keep the moving target in view. That’s a very nice feature to have. The camera can be set to constantly record or only record on a detection event. If you don't want to pay for cloud storage to store these videos and images, you will need to purchase a micro-sd card to install in the camera as local storage. Fortunately, LaView provides a reasonably priced bundle that includes these cards pre-formatted. The camera contains an led light ring that lights up any moving targets at night when motion is detected according to the users desired settings. The light can also be manually switched on from the phone app. It is adequately bright for the purpose of a security camera, but if you are intending to use this product in a light fixture that you depend on frequently, I would recommend against it as it will not be as useful as a replacement for a standard light bulb. As far as durability goes, the camera seems well-built and made of quality plastics. I’m not sure how long it would hold up if directly exposed to the elements with no cover above it as provided by most outdoor light fixtures on porches and balconies. Time will tell how well it holds up outside in general, but I hope it does since I’ve come to really like this product. I was able to set up the camera in no time at all using the included instructions, and the app for the camera is available on both Android and iOS. It is intuitive and very well designed, providing all the functionality I need from a security camera in this price range. I was thrilled to find that the app can send push notifications to the Apple watch. There are more features in this product that I haven’t covered in this review, but if what I’ve already mentioned isn’t enough to persuade you to give this product a try, then I’m not sure you really need a bulb camera. Overall, I cannot recommend this product enough.

What a waste of time and money!
By Sci-fi Mom on Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023
I have looked at these cameras for months. I’ve compared, I’ve contrasted, I’ve looked at different brands. I’ve really tried to ask questions and do my research. Prime Day—yay! This set goes on sale and I snapped them up. They weren’t my first brand pick, but hey, how bad could it be? First, straight out of the box, it wouldn’t pair. I got two, but I’d put one “away”, I only needed one right now. This was going in a light socket, under a carport. No sun, no rain, no weather, and it shares a wall with the router (inside, but same wall, about 9 feet apart). Perfect right? I tried auto- pair several times. Reset, retry, reset, retry….I tried manual set up both in the light socket where I wanted it and in the light socket adapter they send with it. Every six seconds, “make sure you are very close to the router, make sure you are close to the router”, and I’m thinking, “ok, but this is not going to live next to the router.” I did the manual set up over and over. I tried different things with the QR code. In the socket, the camera is upside down, does my QR code (on my phone) need to be upside down? I’m pretty sure the answer to this is no, but I was practically standing on my head by the time I got this thing paired. Just for those of you who think I don’t know how to pair something, I pair my phone in the car, I pair it to speakers throughout the house, etc. Most of my stuff reaches out to my phone and is paired before I even ask, but not this camera. So, sometime after the fifth try to pair manually—oh, and I’m on the second camera now. I never got the first one to pair—it’s on a surge strip in the socket thing they send NEXT TO MY ROUTER, it works. I go through the rest of the set up process in the house—it sets up its encrypted channel, I can see my feet (it’s still upside down). So I unscrew it from the socket and take it quickly to the outdoor socket, screw it in, aaaaannnnndddd—it’s lost it’s encrypted channel. It’s not next to the router anymore and doesn’t work. BUT! This is hardly proven on just one try, so I try it twice more. Back inside, screw it into the socket, up comes a picture of my lovely feet and ankles in my favorite Birkies, unscrew it, go faster out the door, screw it into the socket and it doesn’t work. Times two…. We’re talking nine feet (it’s a small house) length distance and what, maybe 4 to 6 inches between interior and exterior? SAME WALL! I don’t know how this product got so many good reviews. I’d think the company paid for them, but Amazon seems to have a strict review process in place. That is not supposed to happen, but I cannot be the only one who a) had that much trouble pairing, and b) could not get it to work in an outside light receptacle. I’ve already hit the return button and I’ll be sending them back. I guess the only way to go is wired, which is such a bummer because I live in an older house. I really needed this camera to work! Anyway, stay away from this particular set unless you just want hassle and drama in your life. I’d stay away from LaView as well. The English instructions were written by a non-native speaker and left some steps out, confused the auto-pairing instructions with the manual set up instructions, and were wrong about some things. Not the worst set of instructions I’ve come across, but I didn’t get working, did I? I put that squarely on them, so don’t come at me with operator error. In this day and age of technology, this camera should have installed itself and fixed me dinner!
