Disaster
By Johnny Smith on Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2023
I just unboxed and set up this TV today. I was really excited! It has excellent reviews, and the majority of folks say Sony is the best brand of OLED TV! What's happened after I turned it on was very anti-climactic. Diary on day 1 of unboxing: **The included remote batteries were faulty.** At first I thought the screen was freezing. Eventually, after trying literally every kind of TV and remote software update, I realized there's a light on the bottom of the TV that flashes each time you press a remote button, which clued me into the fact that it's not always receiving the buttons I'm pressing. I tried new AAA batteries, and that solved that. I moved onto the next problem. **The Google TV software is repeatedly crashing from the home screen.** On the home screen of Google TV, which is essentially the home screen of the TV, there's this gigantic, silly "Best of 2023" link to click on (apparently to suggest "the best movies of the year 2023", which I don't care about and don't know how to remove), and it happens to be the *first* thing you can click on on the screen. When I click on it, the entire Google TV software crashes. I get an error saying "Loading error" "Unable to load data. Please try again later.", and when I go back to the home screen, it's just a black screen, and it stays permanently black even after power cycling the TV. The only way to fix this is to go to Settings -> Apps -> Google TV -> Clear Cache, then Settings -> System -> Restart. Absolutely ridiculous. ***3 hours after unboxing, the TV won't turn on anymore.*** It's not the remote this time, or Google TV. When I turn it on, I can hear some relays switch on and off, so I know it received the signal, but it's just a black screen, literally nothing happens, even after a few minutes. So I found this Sony article titled My OLED TV screen goes black after I turn on the TV" which says: "This happens when the Picture reset mode is set to On, and you unplug your TV power cord, plug it back in, and then turn it on. The screen will return to normal when the calibration is complete (****approximately ten minutes****)." (Emphasis mine.) Yeah, right. I'm pretty pessimistic at this point, but I set a 20 minute timer anyway and waited with my arms crossed. ...20 minutes later... Nope! What a waste of time!!! I called Sony support. The TV has a blinking red light at the bottom. They said this usually happens only with older TVs, not with this model. Apparently I just got unlucky? Sony said they'll replace it for free, but the catch is, if I have an issue with the new TV, I can't return it. I said "no thanks, I'll be returning it through Amazon!"
