A Fun Card Game That Finally Has Its Own Video Game!
By Dean D. on Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2021
To put it simply, Shadowverse is a digital card game that appeared many years ago on mobile. It offered an interesting take on card games, despite being digital, and that seemed to help it find a fanbase. Over the years, the game grew and expanded with numerous expansions, changes, adjustments, and a growing fanbase. On mobile, it's had 25 million downloads as of 2021. The game also is on Steam. But what's the catch? Because it's a digital card game, one had to deal with buying cards with digital currency to make viable decks. In addition, the game saw expansions release 3-4 times a year to add in new cards and new ways to create decks that could keep up with the meta. For anyone who does total free-to-play, it can be difficult to keep up if you want to push for being the best. That is where Shadowverse: Champion's Battle comes in. It released this year, and offers a very simple storyline that will make it engaging to folks. It isn't some masterful storytelling, just very simple and easy to follow. But the big value is in what the game offers to you. This game keeps things simple enough by making the original content for Shadowverse (Classic) and the first two expansions in the series (Darkness Evolved, and Rise of Bahamut) available for building decks with. There's also 50 exclusive cards within the game (many of which are from the anime series that came out). That equates to around 600 cards. Keep in mind, though, that is less than a THIRD of what the mobile card game has to date (in 2019, it was over 1,700+, so it's expected that the game hit the 2k cards mark by now). There's also a total of 7 classes you can play as, each offering some style of deck (you can go aggro, control, midrange, ramp, etc). So there's a lot of combinations you can go with. Are you missing anything by going this route with the game? No. It offers players the opportunity to earn and collect and build decks all within the game itself for free. You'll play against AI controlled characters with lots of different decks, lots of cards they can drop just by playing them and winning, and there is also a multiplayer component you can engage in to play other players in-game, and to get in-game goodies as well. If you ever want to explore the original card game in full, you can download it on Steam (PC) and mobile both. But be prepared that it is like Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Hearthstone. It's a game that will eventually get you to spend if you want to pursue the highest levels of content and keep up with the userbase in it. Otherwise, get some enjoyment out of this game and hope they do more in the future that offer more expansions and story to enjoy.

Starts Out Good But Goes Flat
By Painmaster212 on Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2022
Was looking for a card game on the Switch and this fit the bill. However, after putting 20+ hours into the game, I find this game to be really cheap, especially in the mid to later parts. Maybe grab if on sale as it's very fun in the beginning just be prepared for later parts to cause you to just shake your head. Hopefully you're not a rage gamer!
