Good Device ruined by Kid Mode
By Roger L. Garstang on Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2022
Got this to allow the kids to watch videos and play music similar to how they use kid mode on their tablets. Cool pattern looks like Dinosaur skin which they love. I even called the device Dinosaur. Other than that and showing time/weather the device is pretty much useless with the Kid Mode turned on. It can play music like crazy, but playing videos is another story. Playing one of their shows by voice is not allowed. They have to swipe from the right and select video or tell it to go to video home. Then they have to pick from a menu of recent, suggestions, character themed shows, or the selection of videos I allow them to watch in my Prime. The last list of videos I selected from my Prime was the only good thing they did on that entire screen. Clicking to watch videos on that screen is limited, slow, and requires them to read well when they just want to play Peppa Pig or Fireman Sam without all that mess. I agree with others on the interface crashing a lot and some things like the auto dim of the screen after 10min never happens either. Drop In does work, but clicking to just view the camera like a nanny cam or baby monitor does not. My phone tries to connect, and the device flashes a banner saying someone is using the camera then immediately says they stopped while my phone still says it is trying then shows an error about unable to connect. After reading others with the same issues I decided to just turn off Kid Mode. Night and Day difference in the device. Tons more options and capabilities. I can now play videos by Voice and the Camera will connect for 5-10 seconds then crashes. It can even browse the web and a bunch of other stuff I don't want them doing. I just turned on all restrictions except allowing Prime Video to get pretty close to Kid Mode and still be able to play videos by voice. It lost the cool background that matches the skin of the device, so I just set it to a black flip clock since the dim after 10 min still seems to not work. I turned off most of the Home content too except weather and notifications/communications stuff. Wake Words are a little more limited and don't have the latest like Ziggy. They really just need to allow a custom word or phrase since TV ads and shows all try to make our devices do things with the standard ones. The kids like using Computer for their echo, but it is a common word in all their shows and even other shows like Star Trek I watch that triggers it often. A usable device after taking the flawed Kid Mode off, and it extended my Kids+ for the tablets along with the 2 year kid warranty and cloth skin pattern so not bad. If they would at least fix the videos to play by voice in Kid Mode it would make a big difference. The Auto Dim and Camera working right too would make it perfect.
