An amazing unapreciated system in the retro mini craze
By Valden on Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019
My first reaction of using the Neo Geo mini was one of bewilderment because before the Neo mini arrived I was Googling emulator consoles and retro systems, and the system never came up in any inquiries. This made me think that perhaps the Neo mini is not an official product or the it is just a piece of garbage and all the Amazon reviews are fake. When the Neo mini arrived I looked over the box trying to find anything out of place or something that seemed off. Not finding anything wrong with the packaging, I Googled to see if the Neo mini is an official product. I was not surprised to find out that it is an actual licensed product.Ok, that must leave the Neo mini being a garbage product with fake reviews. Seriously, that dinky little control stick and screen have to be junk. It must have a cheap plastic casing with poorly emulated games, if the listed games are even on this thing. This little system has to be another cash grab cheap knockoff Chinese product...right?Wrong, this little system is $%^&@#$ AMAZING! That dinky little stick is solid with fluid movement. The screen is clear to see with no ghosting. The buttons are nice and clicky. The case is made of strong plastic with a rubberized solid base. The built in speakers are in stereo and crisp. The emulation is as good as any I have used (FBA, MAME) and each game has four save state slots. On top of this, the Neo mini is emulating the Neo Geo AES Gold system that came with the memory card. Each game is capable of being saved and continued like the original system. There is also a global menu that can be accessed by pressing Start+Select which allows for saving states, volume, brightness, and changing games (feature missing from the Nintendo minis). When plugged into an HD television (via the included HDMI cable with this package) the Neo mini continues to not disappoint. The global menu (Start+Select) even changes to reflect that you are now using an external source by adding a screen quality optimization option that adds an anti aliasing filter. This option is the only thing I can think of that someone might have an issue with. The filter makes the game look a smidge cartoonish, which I hope is demonstrated in the image I added (The image is the best approximation of the Neo mini option I could make using an emulator and is not from the actual system). What about the rest of this package? Everything came in an original box and undamaged. The included control pads are, like the system, well made. The stick is, in my opinion, better than first party Xbox and PS controllers. Buttons are solid, clicky and in a good layout. The only downside is the controllers are only compatible with the Neo mini. This is shame because I would love to use them with other emulators. As I have mentioned throughout this review, I am perplexed how the Neo Geo mini is not the toast of the retro mini console scene. Maybe I am biased because I love everything Neo Geo or perhaps it is due to the form factor not being an AES mini recreation like the other minis. All I know is the Neo mini is not getting the recognition it deserves and I fully recommend it over any of the other retro minis. Unless you do not like Vs fighting games. There are a lot of them.

SNK, I know you can do better. Why haven't you thus far?

I can get over the fact that the joysticks aren't "clicky" (although it would be REALLY nice if they were) but I certainly cannot get over the picture quality. I know it is emulating the games, but does it have to LOOK like it is emulating the games?I guess SNK thought that we would like the games to look muddy. A heavy bilinear filter has been so graciously added to the emulation and the end user is not given the option of shutting it off. So yeah, if you like your NEO-GEO games not to look crisp this is for you.
