Does everything expected, and more
By Shelley P on Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2018
This is a really nice device. I set it up using the AirTV app on my Android phone. I had to create an account, which is a tiny bit annoying since everything is supposed to be local. But such is life. Once I had the account, all I had to do was attach the device to my strategically located antenna, turn it on, wait for the phone app to locate the device and then followed the instructions. The recommendations were to set the phone to the Wifi connection you plan on using for the device, so I set the phone to my 5G connection, first. After the Wifi connection was established, it updated the firmware. It did a quick scan, and returned with 36 channels. This is the absolute max we can get in our area, but since I could move the antenna to my best location, I had a strong signal for every channel. Next, I downloaded the AirTV app on all my Roku TVs and Roku devices. All you need to do is log into your account (using roku buttons, so keep the password shorter), and you're set. The device has two tuners. Sure enough, was able to watch one channel on my Roku TV and a different channel on my phone. You can even watch your local channels on your phone when you're away from home (one mobile only at a time--fair use rules). The interface is clean, you can see your signal strength, and you can even see what is scheduled for the channel for the next several hours. It changes channels quickly. It doesn't interface with Sling TV on Roku yet, but evidently that's coming. There's also a USB slot, so I'm guessing there will be future DVR support using a USB flash drive. And you get a 25.00 gift certificate for SlingTV, even if you're a current subscriber. You can also choose video quality when you're watching using a network other than your home network. Pros: Does exactly what you'd expect, and is very easy to set up. You do need either an iPhone or Android phone, but you don't have to have SlingTV to use. Nice interface, fast channel changing, and dual tuner! Being able to change video quality in mobile app. Being able to watch in mobile app. Cons Minor quibble: having to set up an account, and then having to use Roku handheld to hunt and peck letters for login each Roku. Gets tedious when you're setting up multiple devices. However, once it's set, it's set. Like I said, minor quibble. (If AirTV can use the online login approach, would sure simplify our lives.) The Get Started guide that came with the device didn't have instructions using the AirTV app. It is easy to use, and you can download from Google Play or Apple, depending on your mobile phone. And you'll need the AirTV app to currently watch using a Roku or FireTV. Update: The AirTV device now works with the SlingTV app on Roku and Amazon Fire TV, including the new Amazon Fire TV Cube. If you originally set it up using the AirTV app, you will need to do a factory reset (a hard reset) and then following the set up instructions using the SlingTV app on your Android or iOS phone.

The worst DVR I've ever used
By Coconut on Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2020
Granted, I haven't used any other over the air DVR but I have used DVRs, starting with Tivo and ending with several cloud DVRs and satellite DVRs. This is the most unreliable device I have ever owned, and when it does work, the worst to use. First, It is easy to install and configure, because there is basically nothing to it. You can't choose when to start recording your shows, or when to stop, so the program is always missing the first few minutes and the last few minutes. Not that it matters. The Device does not come with any storage. You have to buy a usb drive. I have a 2 TB Seagate, but it may as well be 500 MB. If you want to record a news program, but don't get to watch the news all the time, then those recorded programs are listed randomly on a list and it's near impossible to tell when they were recorded because they don't have episode numbers and some don't even have the year much less the day of the week or the date. So basically, if you're not deleting everything as you watch it and watching it as soon as you record it, you can spend a lot of frustrating time trying to find the current news. Even then if the program is 30 minutes, they only record 29. If it's an hour they only record 59 minutes and there is no way to reconfigure it to do other wise. Fortunately, it's not 4k, and it does show the names of some of the series I like to watch with episode numbers. That is when it decides to record them. If you're recording a series, and it comes on more than once during the evening, then the SlingDVR will decide when it will record that show, if it does record it, and there is nothing you can do to record it during a specific time frame. There's also no way to tell why it decides not to record a show because it doesn't detect recording conflicts. That doesn't matter though, because even if you're only recording one show, it might just decide not record it at all. My biggest beef is that you cannot pause a live program, not any live program on the antenna. I have a guest account and I'm guessing that's Sling's way of forcing you to pay for an account. So basically, while I'm trying to break free of the cable, sling is trying to force me to use their service, which is just as expensive as a cable and goes up just as frequently as cable and satellite do. That would be great if they had something to offer that cable and satellite don't but they don't! It's a really piece of feces and I would suggest no one buy it.
