Super features and functionality, with a few shortcomings (room for improvement)

Wow...been using older Roku for years. What a difference! Love the fact that we can control power on/off and volume with new Roku remotes on our TV's and setup took seconds not minutes (automatic). Being able to plug in earbuds to remote is so awesome, as my wife is late night TV watcher, and often times I just want to sleep. This allows us to do both at the same time! Way to go Roku! Only thing missing (and not marking it down for this) is no "mute" button. Common Roku, you got so close to perfection! The user interfaces changes with this new unit, compared to old. This takes some getting used to, especially with netflix and amazon. But I think we will get used to it, and perhaps like it better at some point. The reason we bought these new ones, since old ones still function, is for Youtube. With the old ones, youtube would "drop" all the time and take us back to home screen. Also, would hang up and load slowly. Since we have fast high speed broadband, and not happening with other streaming services, we though new roku might help. Wow, night and day! No drops after nearly a month of use, much faster response to remote inputs like pause, FF, rewind, etc. Instant, instead of lagging to the point you hit the same button several times and then wait for it to catch up. Also the user interface is much nicer and saves searches, etc. Very nice new platform for Youtube on the TV. Some things we'd like to see going forward: The voice search works well, as far as "understanding" us....but only works for the "universal search" (that is to say, searching for a show/movie/etc on entire roku platform). Wish we could use it in the app chosen, like Netflix, Youtube, etc., instead of using the old scroll and pick search method (yawn). The "find remote" thing is cool...but so quiet it is almost useless, since when it's lost it's usually under a blanket, between cushions, etc (that's why it's lost). It's not really loud enough to hear for locating, at least for us. But nice feature all the same, make it louder and it's a winner big time! Lastly, the quick launch buttons are basically useless for us. We only use Netflix and not the other 3. You don't even know what 4 you will get when you purchase, since they make several configurations. I know there are "partnerships" and marketing issues in play...but it would be SO nice to name them A, B, C,D and let folks program them for their favorite channels. Could it be better? Yes, in some respects it could be even better than it is. But it still deserves 5 stars since it works so much better than before, and they are innovating nicer features into it, for about what we paid for our old rokus "way back when". Keep it up.

Does its job mostly as advertised, getting pretty annoyed with the malfunctioning remote though...
By Majordani3l on Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019
The Roku Ultra performs mostly as advertised. That is, it works as a streaming device and I am able to use Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, YouTube, YouTube TV, and STARZ (my 6 main apps) as well as use the Roku Media Player through the USB port to play videos and music from there. I will also say, I love the remote finder option and have used it many times. However, I have had a few problems: 1. The Roku has some sort of error where it turns off at random and needs to reboot. In the few months that I've owned it, this has not happened a lot, but has happened around 6-7 times. This is never a big issue because all of the streaming apps save where you are in your video if you device closes, but it's pretty annoying, especially since it can take 3-5 minutes to reboot. 2. The remote is crazy faulty. The number one issue with it (but keep reading, there's more than one issue): The "Play/Pause" button sends a double signal half the time (literally, about 48% of the time, I started counting shortly after I noticed the issue). What I mean by a "double signal" is that I'll press the button and then 3-4 seconds later, when I am no longer touching the button, let alone holding the remote, it will send the signal again. What this means is if the show was paused and I hit the button to make it play, then put the remote down, there's about a 50/50 chance it will pause 3-4 seconds later. It happens in the reverse direction as well, if it is playing and I hit pause to get up and get something, I'll come back 5 minutes later to find that it started playing right after I walked out. I mentioned earlier that was the remote's number 1 problem, but not the only one. The remote also rather frequently (about once per day, sometime more) stops working entirely and I have to remove and then reinsert the batteries to make it work again. The remote also has issues with doing the wrong command for the button that was pressed. About 10% of the time that I press the Pause button it launches voice command mode and says that it didn't catch what I was trying to say and should try again, which is annoying because when this happens it doesn't pause your video, it keeps playing it in the background but muted, so I have to dismiss the voice command function and then rewind (I know what you're thinking, those two buttons are close and maybe my fat thumb is hitting both at the same time, but keep reading because it's not the only one). The Play/Pause button bringing up voice command isn't the only incorrect command issue... While I didn't calculate a percentage on the following errors, some other common command errors include pressing rewind and having it autolaunch Hulu (a shortcut button two rows below it), pressing the "OK" button in the middle of the purple arrows only for it to autolaunch CBS (a shortcut button on the opposite side of the remote), and pressing Volume UP on the side of the remote only for it to change the TV source from HDMI 2 (Roku) to HDMI 1 (my game system). Luckily, one of the nice features of this remote is that when you press ANY button it puts you back on the correct source, so when it does that last command error I just described you can hit literally ANY button, even if it does the incorrect command, in order to get back to the correct source without needing to find your TV remote. As you can see, the main problem for me is this damned remote. I'd love to give the Roku device itself a 5 out of 5 for working as designed (other than the random shutdowns that happen only every few weeks), but honestly, what's the point of giving the system a 5/5 if the remote that controls the system is FUBAR? So, unfortunately, I have to give this product (from this brand I normally find highly reliable) a 3/5. EDIT: I am writing this about one year after my original review above... and it's gotten worse. A LOT WORSE! I've since then downgraded my 3 star review to 1 star. I have had A LOT of Roku brand items work really well for me, but the Ultra is the trashiest piece of garbage I have ever owned. Over the past year the remote has gotten even worse. The issue with the remote where it stops responding and I have to remove and replace the batteries to get it to respond has become the number one issue, far surpassing the previous number one issue of the buttons sending double signals and/or doing things other than what they are labeled for (though both still happen). I now have to remove and reinsert the batteries at least 3 to 4 times a day to keep the remote responding. Also, the headphone jack on the remote now doesn't work (I never even used it very much). In addition to the remote malfunctions, the Roku itself is malfunctioning more frequently. You know that issue I mentioned in my original post about it shutting down and rebooting at random? It's gone from doing that once every few weeks to a couple of times a day! What's worse is that it doesn't even reboot itself now! It doesn't actually shut down all the way (I never wind up seeing my TV's blue hdmi input screen), the screen just goes black and the Ultra refuses to respond to the remote and does not reboot itself... thus multiple times per day, while watching shows, I have to get up and go unplug and replug the Roku from the wall to force it to reboot. Also, I'm now experiencing issues with the USB input (where you can plug a usb with videos, pictures, or audio into) that I expressed a love for in my original review. Probably about 25% of the time that I use a usb in that port to watch videos it will all of a sudden freeze and quit the media player app. When I go back into the app it will say there is no USB plugged in. If you unplug the USB and plug it back in it will still refuse to recognize it. Again, the only solution seems to be to unplug the Roku from the wall and force it to reboot at which point you can use the USB port again (but still with a 25% chance of failure in which you'll have to unplug it again). I don't know whether to buy an older version Roku (which have worked VERY reliably for me in the past) or switch to a different brand. It really sucks when a brand you trust becomes this trashy (but I'll admit I'm also kinda impressed that they did it in a single generation; there was no slow downhill decline. They went from dependable and reliable to worst in the industry in no time flat... that deserves some kind of sarcastic slow clap imo).
