Great value, simple installation, sounds good.

Overall this is a great receiver for folks with 5.1 or 7.2 systems and want an easy installation—with the option to get your hands dirty into the details if you want—while providing a surprisingly decent sound for the price. THX certification is just icing on the cake. The number of HDMI connections this unit has is more than other receivers in its price range. That said, don’t expect options and sound quality of receivers that cost 5-10x of what this unit costs. Value is excellent—you get a lot for the price you pay. The real question for me will be the units longevity—my precious Yamaha receiver lasted almost 20 years. I’ll post an update if anything goes awry.

Gonna be a no from me dog...

So, this review comes from a very specific, antiquated place which most people might roll their eyes over or even throw up an annoyed "That's not worth a one star review!" response. It doesn't run the audio through my HD-DVD collection. Yes, the old format-war DVDs from 2007-2008. I have a handful and some of them I still watch. Well, not any more because there's no audio. The picture comes through fine but there's no sound associated at all. Now I know most people might read this and go "who cares, I don't have any format war HD DVDs" and that's fair but the receiver reveals another problem - Onkyo's customer service on this has been pretty unstellar. I called up their customer service line hoping to figure out if there was a setting I needed to change because I was all out of ideas. The tech on the line didn't even know what HD-DVD was and suggested that I try a factory restart. When that didn't work, she said she didn't know what else to do. I am annoyed that, if the receiver won't support HD-DVD audio for some odd reason, nobody thought of this prior. Still though, I sort of get it...it is a dead format. But how hard would it have been to handle this? My old Onkyo did just fine. More than that, though, I'm annoyed that Onkyo was absolutely no help and that's why it gets a 1 star review. Even if they would have told me something like "yes, that's a problem and our new software set up...blah blah blah..." I could have known that it wasn't going to work and just gotten something else but they didn't even know what the format was. This isn't actually the first time I've had problems with an Onkyo receiver. The first one I bought (review is on Amazon) the receiver had to be sent back and get fixed right out of the box...I got it back and it worked (after 6 weeks of not having a receiver). If anybody out there on Amazon knows why the audio problem might be happening, I'd love it if you threw out some suggestions, but I shouldn't have to go to an Amazon Review comments section to get information on a product I bought, so, in all likelihood, this'll be the last Onkyo product I'll buy. ***Edit*** Eventually, I did figure out how to make the receiver work with the HD-DVD player, but ran into a few other issues. I ended up replacing it with a Yamaha that I got from Costco and the Yamaha works quite a bit better. Ultimately, the problem with the HD player turned out to be a handshake issue with the HDMI cable. To fix it with this reciever, you need to plug the HD-DVD player into the auxillary port in the front. The ports on the front, for whatever reason, corrected the handshake. It's also possible that the first two ports in the back may have worked - I'll be honest, I never checked those. But the last two, which is where I had the HD DVD player plugged into definitely had handshake issues. Ultimately, the performance on the Yamaha was significantly better and well worth the extra money. The picture and sound is quite a bit crisper and clearer. I do stand by the 1 star review, simply because Onkyo's customer service was abysmal in trying to correct the issue. Yamaha's customer service actually had a few more useful suggestions, and ultimately we arrived at the fix. So there you go.
