4"] (I'm pleased with this remote) - Power adapter is 100-240V "Universal" ...
By Craig Arno on Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2018
My application is a bedroom setup with an older Vizio 1080p TV and 2 year old Yamaha home theater amplifier connected to some very large Speakerlab 7 speakers. This is my first Roku, though I've used others at friends homes. Pros: - Works with my Plex server (local media [my computer], internet news) and Netflix [successful cable cord cutting effort] - Came with RC100 remote, headphone jack, A/B buttons, no TV Power, does control home theater volume with remote through HDMI ["Detected: 1080i HDCP 1.4"] (I'm pleased with this remote) - [Update] This unit works with Roku Enhanced Remote with Power/Volume - [Update] Unit works with two Roku Remotes at the same time (Deliverd + Enhanced). - Power adapter is 100-240V "Universal" adapter Level VI efficiency (very good) 12V@1A - Remote has headphone jack for my external noise cancelling headphones (helped make my buy decision) - Unit feels like good "human engineering" went into hardware and software design. Volume control responds exactly how I want. CPU load on Plex server is minimal, unit is very easy for me to use and exceeds my expectations for quality, usage, efficiency. - Remote runs from "standard" AA batteries. I'm using rechargeable NiMh batteries - Works well (very responsive) wired to my older 100mb/s full duplex switch - Wireless AC detected, registers "Good", and works well/quickly (though being wireless isn't as fast/quick as 100mb/s hardwired) - Wireless N also quick, registers "Good", but not as quick as wireless AC (Both my AC and N access points are Gigabit wired) - No fans (silent operation), barely warm to touch - Remote finder - Remote well laid out, easy to use, functional, convenient. - Expected problems with refurbished unit, haven't found any yet Cons: - Supplied headphones are poor sound quality, but do work (I have my own high quality headset, so don't care) - Forced to enter valid credit card during Roku setup. For people like me who don't want any extra charges -ever- there should be the option of skipping credit card entry. I also consider providing valid credit card information an unreasonable security risk. Roku site allows for "Always require a PIN to make purchases." Addendum: Hooked this Roku unit up to my Vizio M43-C1 4K TV and gigabit switch: - Fastest Wired Ethernet connection is 100mb, no Gigabit operation. 100mbs is plenty fast/responsive and certainly faster (less latency) than Wireless AC on a gigabit switch. - For 4K operation: HDMI port must be HDMI 2.0, 4K@60Hz with HDCP 2.2 for Netflix to display and play 4K content. [4K@30Hz = NO 4K operation for Netflix] - I don't have HDR and Netflix and Plex Apps don't require HDR to play 4K content. - Tried the Roku Android "Remote Control" app on my phone. Works just like the supplied remote, even will switch TV Sound to play through the phone sound system instead, just like the real remote. The "Remote Locator" doesn't "ring" the phone Android app. - I also ordered a 4660 (2017) Ultra, and the remote from that works with this 4640x (2016) unit. - The 4660 is faster than the 4640x, but we're talking the difference between 1 second vs 1.25 second load times (not a big deal) - This 4640x has the optical out plug, the 4660 does not have an optical output. - I ordered an Enhanced Remote with Power/Volume from Roku for one of my TV setups. The non-enhanced remote will become remote #2 in the bedroom with the home theater setup. Turns out with my home theater, theater volume can't be controlled with the Enhanced remote without sacrificing TV On/Off capability. So the enhanced remote, while nice, doesn't add any features I don't already have with the non-enhanced remote (theater volume control). The enhanced remote is only good when the TV controls all audio. With a home theater amplifier, this isn't the case, the TV is just a "Monitor".

While I might give a 4 for product design, I give 0 for customer support, and it turns out 1 it the lowest Amazon accepts.

The best way to show how much I would like to give a zero to this product is by cutting and pasting my correspondence with the support department. If you think this is acceptable, we are cut from different cloth, because I'm not one to enjoy being insulted, especially over of $5-6 part. I purchased this unit less than four months ago. With all the new streaming devices coming on to the market, you would think ROKU would want to hold on to their market share. My favorite repetitive line in their correspondence is "I apologize for the inconvenience that this problem has caused you." Penny-wise and pound-foolish, in my opinion. By the way, although the pasted thread doesn't show it, every new response from them after the first one included the presumptive close, "Your request #(1244984) has been marked as resolved." Irritating. The correspondence below should be read from the bottom up: ________________________________________ From: Roku support [mailto:customersupport@roku.com] Sent: Thursday, December 28, 2017 12:43 PM To: Mark Subject: [Request resolved] #1244984 - Questions about returning my Roku player Hi Mark, Your request #(1244984) has been marked as resolved. To add additional comments to this ticket , reply to this email. Issue : Questions about returning my Roku player ________________________________________ Ash, Dec 28, 12:42 PST: Hi Mark, I appreciate your time in contacting Roku! I apologize for the inconvenience that this problem has caused you. It has been our aim to provide you the excellent service you deserve and we would like to count and keep you as one of our satisfied and valued customers. Uncontrollable situation like this can also be very frustrating on our part as there is nothing that we can do to make you happy.Despite this, allow me to sincerely thank you for taking the time to email us. Take care and have a good day. Regards, Ash ________________________________________ Mark, Dec 28, 10:07 PST: Really! That’s Roku’s version of customer service? If your product had worked this poorly when I purchased it, I would have returned it within Amazon’s return period. Now that it is out of the 30 day return period from Amazon I get silly excuses from you, the manufacturer, who is supposed to be warrantying it for a year. What value is your headphone feature if your customer can’t watch even a full feature film? By now a reputable company would have sent me a new remote instead of wasting my time. What do these cost you to make? $5? $6? Nonsense! ________________________________________ Ash, Dec 28, 06:02 PST: Hi Mark, Thank you for writing to us, I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. As we have discussed when you use the Headsets with the Remote control, headsets will use the power from the batteries. I suggest you to try using the rechargeable batteries in your remote control or try using the private listening feature from your smartphone. Take care and have a good day. Regards, Ash ________________________________________ Mark, Dec 27, 08:51 PST: When I first received the unit, batteries lasted 20+ hours with the headphones. Now you can’t even watch one movie. Something has definitely gone wrong. It works fine without the headphones, but the reason I purchased it was to use with headphones. ________________________________________ Ash, Dec 27, 05:40 PST: Hi Mark, Thank you for contacting Roku! I apologize for the delay in response and inconvenience caused to you. From your email I understand that the batteries are draining fast in your remote control, when you use the Headsets in the remote control, the headsets will consume the power from the batteries to run, it will make the batteries to drain fast. I request you to observe the remote control without the headsets and check whether the batteries are draining fast or not. Take care and have a good day. Regards, Ash ________________________________________ Mark, Dec 24, 12:42 PST: I’ve attached my receipt. Attachment(s) ________________________________________ Mark, Dec 23, 15:42 PST: Message: Since receiving the unit, the remote would eat batteries quickly when headphones were plugged in, but I figured it was simply the nature of driving the audio from the remote. Battery use continued to get worse over time, and now the audio breaks up in the headphones except with brand new batteries, somewhere between 80-90% battery life left. It is intermittent (every few seconds), and seems to have nothing to do with the headphone cable (I've tried three different headphones, with the same problem).
