Very happy so far! A nice projector.

I received this Epson 5030UB projector about a week ago, and at this point I'm very pleased. I purchased an Optoma 143X last year, and started noticing the 'rainbow effect' more & more over time. I did research & found that there are really only 2 semi-affordable 3D-capable projectors that don't have this issue... from Sony & Epson. Of the 2, the Epson is supposed to be a little better with 3D, which I watch a lot. While this projector is refurbished, it came to me looking like new. It had the remote & 2 sets of 3D glasses... all in new packaging. If it didn't say 'refurbished' on the box, I wouldn't have known. The Epson picture is a bit brighter than my Optoma, and a little crisper & clearer. I can read smaller lettering on the screen. And using the standard (I don't use 'eco') brightness mode, it's bright & clear in 3D even with some ambient light. I'm just projecting on a wall right now, but I've ordered a screen so I'm expecting it'll be even better after that. There's talk about how the Epson has a 'screen door effect'. OK... it's real, but it's really a non-issue unless you're within 3 or 4 foot of the screen. What it's all about is if you're up close when the screen is big, you'll see the separate pixels that look kinda like a window screen. But I have a 106" diag picture, and only notice it if I'm close. At 12 feet (where my couch is), you can't tell at all. So, unless you're planning on projecting a 100" + picture and sitting like 4 foot away, don't worry about it. One big positive... this Epson is VERY flexible in where you place it... you can move the picture up/down/left/right, and it has keystone correction. The Optoma has a fixed projection spot so you have to move the projector itself. One minor negative... this Epson projector doesn't have internal speakers, so you'll need to get a sound bar & an HDMI splitter with audio-out. No biggie, but worth knowing since the Optoma has a built-in speaker (even though it's weak). Anyway, in a nutshell... I'm very pleased with the Epson 5030UB projector. Great with 3D & 2D. I've read a few horror stories about the Epsons breaking down after 2 years or so, but hopefully this refurb had any bugs fixed & it won't be an issue. We'll see. For under $1300, this is truly an amazing projector. If you aren't sensitive to the rainbow effect, for under $600 the Optoma 143X is pretty nice & does good 3D. However... there's no doubt in my mind the Epson 5030 is superior in every way for the extra $700. And no more rainbows!

Disappointed!

Even the reviews were very good I decided to buy Epson 5030ub refurbished unit for $1200 since I was not able to buy a brand new one since it was over $2000. First issue under the version info it shows as 720 and bitb1080!! The picture quality was bad and the words were very blarely even though I did all the adjustment and contact Epson as well. Mine came with projector, power cable and remote only. It seems to be a returned or damaged unit and they just put it back in the box for resale I sent it back the next day I believe there may be an internal issue with it
