Excellent Camping knife or backup bushcraft knife.

I just returned today from a weekend camping trip for my friend's bachelor party. I would call us recreational campers/hikers. He usually camps once a year with his fiance as well. I wanted to get him a unique and affordable little gift for his bachelor camping trip, but something that wouldn't be put on the shelf and forgotten about either. Something that would warrant use in particular circumstances. So after some research, I concluded on the Light My Fire/Mora knife. It wasn't too expensive where one would feel guilty using it in the field or if it got lost, it can easily be replaced without feeling guilty about the money spent. I own a Mora MG Clipper carbon steel so I am a fan and know what they're capable of. Mora has a great reputation for ridiculously sharp and quality, affordable knives. Additionally, it isn't as large as the clipper knives so it can easily be stored in his trunk of his vehicle as he travels for work and could come in handy in an emergency or for simple tasks that might necessitate the need for a knife. He put it to use for the first time yesterday and it was really impressive. Like all Mora's it came hair shaving sharp out of the box. I opted for the lime green color so it would be visible in the woods if it was dropped. Someone was about to light the campfire with a Bic Lighter, but I stopped him and suggested that the bachelor try out his new knife. The Light My Fire fire steel worked like a charm. After three precise strikes on our makeshift tinder (dryer lint stuffed in a cardboard toilet paper roll that I dabbed with some Carmex lip balm), the tinder ignited and provided the starting base for our fire that we kept roaring through the night for about 15 friends from HS and College. We had a great time around the camp fire cooking and drinking, talking about old times and the future and busting each others' chops as good friends do. And it all started with the Light My Fire/Mora Knife. He and I were both very satisfied with the gift. This knife definitely shouldn't be abused and used for heavy duty bushcraft, but it is perfect for light duty tasks pertaining to anglers, campers, hikers, and the like for the practicality and quality.

Good Bad Knife?
By thx1138 on Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2013
Lets start with me... I love knives (even Mora's) and have quite a collection! I also work with steel and i am very familiar with manufacturing techniques. I ordered this Knife as a present for a buddy of mine, he an I really liked the features of this knife, when it came in I gave it a once over. At first I was impressed with the grip and quality put into the knife, until i started to notice how cheap the finish on it was. The edges of where the injected plastic met the blade were unfinished(like cheap plastic Army men) and the blade had an uneven bevel(grind on one side was higher than the other side). Not only that but IT WAS NOT EVEN SHARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked...(Whhhhhhaaattt!!!!!! ) Mora has higher standards when making knives, I know they have Lemons but this...really? What butt-hole let this one by? >:( I went to work with sand paper and wet stones, cleaned up the handle and sharpened the blade(So sharp it could cut atoms in half). Once done it was 1000 times better than before! I told my friend what happened and how i did a little surgery to the blade , he just smiled and said "what a perfectionist",...he had a Happy birthday and really enjoyed the knife! Now on to the review: Pro- Durable, smooth, cool colors, great fire-steel, decent sheath, good steel(Sandvik 12C27 easy to sharpen), and sharper than before(I cut my eyes just reading that). Con: bad manufacturing techniques, should be sharp out of box... Mora, way to pricey for a peace of plastic and steel! I hope no one else has this happen to them if so send it back to the company with a nasty letter and tell them I sent you!!!

Overall I am very happy with this knife. Great lightweight addition to the camping or backpacking bags.

Great addition to the camping and hiking bags. I tested the striker out on a couple types of kindling, it worked perfectly on my favorite fire starter (cotton balls with vaseline). It gives a good shower of hot sparks that caught fire on the first strike. With other types of kindling like shredded bark or dry grass, it got the job done in two to three strikes. Like anything else you have to nurture the embers to get the flame going nicely. The striker is a little short so it may a minute to find a good way to hold it. In an emergency cold and shaky hands may have a tough time with it, but the lanyard on the striker would save you from dropping it. If you are one of those that will use a blade as a hammer or screwdriver then this is not the knife for you. For the rest of us, the blade is finely crafted and came with a very nice edge and draft design on the business end. The knife is balanced quite well, and the overall weight is minimal. The handle is made of a good material that has nice grip to it. I am not a huge fan of plastic sheathes but this one fits well enough, I may change it out though. I am a little concerned about how the striker fits into the handle. I wonder if the twist to lock motion will wear out the material after some use and become too loose to stay locked in place. I can say that after the first few trial attempts is seems to be holding fast. Only time will tell on that one. Overall I am very happy with the knife, its a great value compared to the cost.
A Hit from Mora and Light My Fire

I love it when a good plan works out. MoraKniv is my go-to for fixed blade knives, and this one is designed to use the back with a ferro rod, which the incorporated in to the handle. I now use a 6" ferro for my primary fire starter that works beautifully with this knife, and the included rod in the knife provides me with my backup rod just in case. This simplifies my packing which is always appreciated. I tested this on seasoned oak last weekend. Feathered the wood nicely once I got the technique down, each knife handling this chore a bit differently. Cut some larger bits up just for testing purposes. The edge held up beautifully through this on very hard wood. The knife itself is of course very sharp, durable since it is a Mora and just as handy as a knife can be due to their excellent handle design. I don't know why the double bevel unless that helps in thin slicing veggies or something however, it looks cool as heck and my buddies were all over it, holding it up and looking at it. I kept my mouth shut because I have not found a use for it yet, taking some summer sausage on the next camping trip to try to thin slice that. Highly recommended.

First Mora knife in my collection. I read the reviews and bought it for using to cut food while camping. Having a sheathed knife is always better when camping, taking the house knives in an open box can be a problem. However, I now see this knife can be used for more. It is build well enough to take into the woods. I carved a few pieces of wood and it worked really well. The case is a nice fit. I ordered black, and it looks ok on my belt. I think the other bright colors might look more like a toy but this knife really is more. The fire stick is locked in place and it has a lanyard attached to it. The belt clip is for a 1.5"-1.75" belt. The clip and sheath look a little light but I'm impressed after using it. The sheath also has a thumb rest to make removing the knife easier. I can remove the knife with one hand if it is sitting on the table. The knife clips into the sheath, you can feel/hear the knife is secure. The size of the knife is just right, any larger and it would be harder to sit down in the car with it attached. I should have bought one of these years ago. Glad I found it and the reviews on the web. It is a surprising good knife for the cost.
Mora's Light My Fire Knife

I had been looking for a nice EDC knife for awhile when I remembered Mora's. I was stuck between several models when I saw the Light My Fire Knife. It was a Mora, stainless, has a flat spine, has the rubbery grip, and the cherry on top was the Swedish Fire Steel in the handle. Yes it's a little more expensive than a Companion, but this knife is worth every penny. You can't use it for batoning or hammering but it stands up to just about every other task! This is an excellent all around knife and suits my EDC needs perfectly. If you're looking for a multipurpose knife for a fishing/hunting kit or BOB for the price range Mora's are very hard to beat! The knife is razor sharp. I use it to cut paracord all the time and it still cuts arm hair no problem. The fero rod is the highest quality I have seen. It's much thicker than you usually see in knives, especially at this price point. It throws sparks 20 times better than any other fero rod I own. If there's any chance at all that I might be in the woods then this knife is with me. I hope to never have to use it but it gives me piece of mind knowing I can easily build a fire if needed. I can not recommend this knife more. The only thing I would change on this knife is the lanyard. I wish they had used proper 550 cord simply because I think it would look and feel better. However, I find the reflective strands more useful and since I don't have any reflective cord that matches I leave it be for now.

I bought one of these knives for my wife. We were going camping and I thought she needed an introduction to some basic knife/bushcraft skills. She loved the purple color. I loved that the ferro rod was built into the knife for her. The blade is thin enough that slicing meat and cleaning fish is very easy, yet you can absolutely process light fire wood also. I was able to put a wicked edge on it as well. My wife prefers this to some of our kitchen knives now. It is very light weight. Surprisingly light actually. The sheath is good. I like my other Mora sheaths better. But this one is fine. It does not have the hole in the clip to put it in a button or run a cord through to wear it as a neck knife... But, who cares I guess. I never care much about having a stainless steel knife. Id rather my wife not need too worry about a rusting blade. Like I said, you can get this plenty sharp. The spine is a great 90 degrees. Perfect for scraping wood into shavings and igniting them with the fire steel. It also serves well in the absence of sand paper. I made a spoon on our trip with this knife and smoothed out the edges with the spine. Bought one in green for myself! There are better knives out there of course. It would not be a mistake to have this knife even if you buy it and don't like it. Give it to someone and get them outside.

I own three of these and am returning to buy another for my son. I have used these with scouts, (the wilderness survival merit badge requires them to light a fire with 3 alternative methods), survival campouts, lighting a camp chef stove and a solite stove, as well as my own family trips into the wild. Our family loves to backpack and this is a great all around tool to have on such a trip for several reasons. First of all they are very lightweight. I know some ultralight backpackers who try to shave off weight by carrying super small knives or even just a razor blade, this is so much more useful and even with the sheath only weighs 3.9 ounces. Second, the blade is amazing! It comes ultra sharp and will take a new edge very easily if it dulls. The only time I have ever had to rework an edge on mine was after loaning it to a couple of scouts who weren't listening, (and I forgot how closely you have to watch them sometimes, sigh) and they used the blade to scrape the rod for sparks! Grrrrr! Well, a little time with my sharpening stone and we're back to shaving sharp. So far, any mora knife could claim this though, my third reason for loving these is the ferrocomium rod integrated into the handle. I have used many different brands of these rods, they are available widely, but this one has been the most consistent one with the most sparks. It makes lighting up a cotton ball super quick and easy for lighting a campfire and it creates a nice enough shower of sparks that it will light any gas stove I care to use it on. So is this the only knife you need? That's a personal question. If I could only take one out backpacking I would probably choose this one myself. Personally, I like to have back ups for my tools and essentials like fire starting, and for that alone this is wonderful. It's a great tool that fills the need well. I personally keep one in my EDC bag and another in my vehicle (for that occasional wild apple that needs slicing) I have never been disappointed when I have needed a good knife or a fire starter and I have reached for this tool.
Solid (and affordable) two-in-one knife + firestarter solution for backpackers and campers

I was looking for a basic knife to replace a heavy multi-tool I'd been using for backpacking knife and have been happy with this. In fact, this replaced my heavier knife and my emergency firestarter reducing my gear load by a number of ounces. Yay! I like the purpose. This isn't a $100 knife, but for the price it's pretty great. The blade is SHARP. It feels relatively solid in your hand. The sheath is definitely a hard plastic, which I was wary about, but I don't mind it and most importantly the knife fits securely into it so you're not a risk of accidentally cutting yourself. It clips onto my belt easily. When the fire starter is pushed into the knife handle it serves as a string to hand or hold the knife. As far starters go I actually find this approach of knife + flint stick easier to use than many other starter kits I've tried. Also good news if you find yourself in a bind. For campers and backpackers who want a nice, simple, two-in-one solution for a good price I highly recommend

This is an amazing knife for the price. I purchased this for my wife for our camping trips so she would have her own knife which could also be used as a backup in case something happened to my knives. It came very sharp and with a nice 90 degree spine for shaving wood or for use with a firesteel like the one included in the handle. It works great for that purpose and throws some very nice sparks effortlessly. The included firesteel is a good quality albeit somewhat small so while it works well I would purchase a full size firesteel separately as well. The nice feels very good in the hand and has a nice grip that gives you good purchase on the knife while in use even when wet. The blade and the knife in general is pretty small and light so definitely not a chopper and while you can do some light batoning you will want to keep the pieces fairly small that you work with. In the tasks this knife was really designed for it excels. Great for carving wood, making feathersticks, striking firesteels, general cutting tasks, etc... I don't carry a saw or ax when camping so I prefer a larger, full tang knife for my personal usebut this is an excellent blade and can stand up to all but the most demanding tasks willingly. Heavier duty stuff like batoning thick wood either isn't possible due to blade size or may decrease the longevity of the knife due to the partial tang construction but for the price and the work it was meant to do it's a great little knife. Also the sheath that comes with it while not being a beautiful leather work of art is very functional. It holds the knife in very well, allows for easy removal andhas a drain hole at the bottom in case you get some water in it. All in all a great package for the price.

This is a nice camp knife. It is light enough to take backpacking, comes already very sharp and has a good, comfortable handle. The blade is big enough to be useful for a lot of tasks, without adding a lot of weight. The fire starter in the handle works just fine. There is a nice edge on the back of the knife designed to work with the fire steel and so it throws a considerable shower of sparks. I've used it to light fires, light my cookstove, etc. It twist-locks into the handle securely. You aren't going to lose the fire starter because it fell out of the handle. Mora knives are high quality and this is no exception. It is stainless steel so maintenance is a bit easier than with a carbon steel knife. The sheath locks the knife in securely, and I like that it is bright orange so it is unlikely to get lost in the woods or down inside your pack. I don't like that the sheath isn't reversible - I'm a lefty and so if I wanted to wear this knife, it would either be backwards or on the wrong side. A minor inconvenience for a utility knife like this. I see this as an inexpensive, high quality companion knife to a larger blade, saw or axe if I have to do more serious work like batoning wood, chopping, etc. while out in the woods. Although I suppose it could be pressed into that role in an emergency, the blade isn't that long and it really isn't designed for that kind of work. It is more the knife you use for cutting paracord, light wood working, etc.
