Holy Stone F181 Quadcopter Is Fun and a Beast, great for a Beginner like Me!
By EddieT on Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2015
I ordered the "Holy Stone® RC Drone with HD Camera,4CH 2.4GHz 6-Gyro,equipted with Headless System(A Key Back)", which I'll refer to as the F181 for the rest of this review, from Holy Stone while it was out of stock, and it shipped Prime when processed so once they got it back in stock, I received it in 2 days. I ordered it on a Friday and it arrived the following Tuesday, so I was happy since it was out of stock when I ordered. You will also be pleased with Holy Stone's service, they sent an email via Amazon asking if I was happy with the item, and if I needed replacement parts. I didn't need anything, but after reading other reviews on Holy Stone items and other users easily getting replacement parts, I am happy with their service and would recommend to others. I ordered this F181 after receiving the Holy Stone F180C (listed as "Holy Stone® mini RC Quadcopter with 720P Camera,4CH 6-Axis Gyro 2.4 GHz"). The F180C was nice at first, worked great, but the propellers broke easy even with the basket attached, which wouldn't have been an issue and I would not have returned it because they give you 8 extras. The real issue I had with the F180C was the power wires and battery harness. The battery was hard to get in and out, and the last time I went to take it out the black wire came off the circuit board rendering it useless. I could have taken it apart and re-soldered it, but it was brand new and I foreseen it happening again with its existing design, you can see the circuit board and wire connections when you take the battery out which I did not like. I did some research and found some reviews on YouTube, also posted here on Amazon, which showed the F181 and how it has its own closed compartment, and another plus, a power button which even my $200 Dromida Ominus FPV doesn't have. I then ordered this F181 from Holy Stone, and returned the broken F180C. I ordered this F181 so that I can mess around without worrying about breaking my Ominus FPV, and try to get better at the controls. So far I love it, I haven't even touched my Ominus since I got this F181. This thing seems undescructable, at least the propeller cages in place. I've had this thing drop down on clay ground, and cement, from 30+ feet upside down, and it still got up and flew like a champ. It's very easy to control, and will hover still for the most part, maybe little control here and there. I have broken 2 of the propeller guards and ordered the replacement kit, but if you have seen the falls I've done with this thing you'd thing it would have been junk by now. Even though I have ordered the new guards, I haven't even replaced the broken ones yet, I simply adjust the broken guards so they aren't touching the propellers, and send it back up, but I'll replace them in a week so that they don't burn out the motors. Another thing, I've burned out 2 motors on the Ominus so far, one from a bad crash, but the other simply from grass stopping the propeller from Spinning, but with the F181 I've had it stuck in trees with branches in the way of the props while running to free it, but even though the branches were in the way it didn't burn out the motors. Instead it just it cuts power to the motors and starts blinking unit reset which is another thing I love about this thing. As for the flips, I've used the auto flip (top right trigger button followed by direction on the right stick) and it does well when it's about 20+ feet up, otherwise it seems to come down and bounce off the ground, and the feet are springy, so when I say bounce it literally bounces, sometimes I lose control, but gain it back quickly. I'd say it drops about 3 feet during a spin, but then goes back up, but for some reason, maybe my own fault for lack of throttle, if I'm maybe 15 to 20 feet or lower it always comes and bounces. I have not used the call back feature in a large open area, and I've only tested it about 20 to 30 feet with low altitude, mabye 10 to 15 feet up. I have it hover, then hit the call back (right button on the left direction cross pad), it starts beeping and then comes at me. I haven't tested it much, so I can't rate it on the call back, but with my experience it seemed to only come to me when its back was to me, not facing me, but that maybe my misunderstanding, so when I take it out in a wide open field to test, I'll update this review. Controlling the F181 is easy too, I haven't used it in powerful winds, but in the wind we have here in Southern Cali, it handled great. Another note, it is closer to the size of my Dromida Ominus FPV than it's predecessor the F180C that I had, so it's not really a house quadcopter, but you can try I guess. The F180C about half its size I'd say, so it was okay to fly around the house. In my house, we have ceiling fans in every room, and during the summer months without an AC they are running almost 24/7, so needless to say, the F180C got batted a few times. All in all I definitely recommend this to an RC quadcopter beginner, as I am, and really to anyone who wants one. It's a beast and you will have a lot of fun with it without worrying about it breaking.

When the drone is in perfect working order
By Amazon Customer on Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017
Over the past six weeks, I have had a lot of experience with this product, having played around with three of them (one given me free by Holy Stone customer support after considerable challenges and a significant learning curve). Summary: When the drone is in perfect working order, it is a lot of fun. It is very fragile and easily lost in the slightest wind. Using the 100% power setting helps with control in mild wind. I strongly recommend arranging some means of locating a lost drone or you may very well lose it like I did. (see details of my recommendation, below.) When I shared my initial travails with Holy Stone, they offered to send me a new drone free of charge. They did and I applaud them for standing by their product..Once you confirm that the drone is working, use full power. Don't use the "Emergency Landing" maneuver! Details below: The drone is very easy to lose! If it gets out of range, it doesn't land immediately, but can be carried on the wind a considerable distance. After losing one, my solution, which I consider a must, is to supplement the drone with some kind of extremely light-weight signaling device to aid in locating it. After my first one was lost some hundred yards or so away (never to be recovered), I have used a small piece of double-stick velcro to attached a "Drone Keeper Mini" to the underside of the camera. This 6-gram device is a beeper that automatically sounds after 30 seconds of no motion. The beeper on multiple occasions has enabled me easily to locate the drone when I inadvertently let it fly out of range. After familiarizing yourself with the controls and verifying that the drone is working under ideal (no wind) conditions using the default, low power setting (25%), switch to the full power (100%) setting. With the higher power, the drone has considerably better ability to buck a slight wind. One of my drones has more speed in reverse than forward. Consequently, if there is any wind, I always first back it into the wind to be sure I can get it to return! After a few crashes, one drone became unstable after a minute or two of operation, consistently veering to the front right out of control. I detected a hint of friction in the right front motor that might have caused it to run just a bit to slow as the battery power dropped. Fortunately, replacing the front right motor solved the problem completely. (Youtube videos are helpful disassembling the drone to change motors. I chose not to un-solder the old motor wires from the circuit board and solder the new motor contacts there. Instead, I cut, stripped, twisted and soldered the new motor wires to the old, leaving the circuit board untouched. Fiddling with the circuit board, as described in one video, looked to me like a recipe for disaster.) Don't use the "Emergency landing" maneuver described in the instruction manual! I tried it once. One perfectly working drone immediately dropped out of the sky. The resulting uncontrolled crash broke one rotor arm broke completely off. Richard Denney
