very happy

I got the XGA version of this projector to replace a very similar projector I got in 2012 that I do all my TV viewing on. The one I had was an Epson, also XGA format, but 3LCD rather than DLP. Back when I got the Epson it was about $550. A similar projector today would be about $350, in other words, the ViewSonic DLP machine is about the same price as a comparable 3LCD machine. Generic observations: If your viewing is primarily TV cable type stuff I believe XGA resolution is still all you need to get a very good picture. My cable was 1080i back in 2012 and still 1080i in 2016. This is not scientific but the XGA appears to do a very good job of reproducing an image in that format. I would guess the same goes for 720p content. Some day I'm sure I'll get a 1080p or UHD format machine but for what I use the projector for it makes no sense at this point in time. Here are some comparisons of the ViewSonic with the Epson. The Epson is of course older, but I believe the counterpart Epson today would still be the same technology, so it is probably a reasonably fair comparison even though the Epson is older. 1). The colors look a bit more vivid on the ViewSonic. My hunch is that this is a benefit of DLP versus 3LCD, although I don't have hard evidence for that. 2). The light coming out from the Epson spilled over outside the rectangle containing the image. That is not the case for the ViewSonic, outside the image it is dark. The "spillover" never bothered me when watching the Epson, but the image from the ViewSonic does have a bit more of a sharp professional look to it because of not having spillover of light outside the image. I suspect that this difference between the machines is due to the behavior of DLP versus 3LCD, but again I am not certain. 3). The image from the ViewSonic is not quite as big as that from the Epson. I have a 100 inch screen on the wall, and with the Epson the image covered about 95% of the horizontal distance across my screen, while the ViewSonic placed in the same spot in my room only spans about 85% of the screen. Since I have the projector all the way across the room from the screen, I can't move it further away to fill the screen completely. This is a slight drawback for me as far as the ViewSonic versus the Epson, but I don't consider it a major issue, it's still plenty big enough to get that "home theater" experience. 4). The Epson had a control to adjust the image if it was trapezoidal with the left edge being shorter or longer than the right edge. The ViewSonic only can adjust for trapezoidal shape if the top edge is shorter or longer than the bottom edge. However, it dawned on me that the reason I had to use the adjustment on the Epson for the first of those two cases was that I had the projector slightly to the right of center relative to the screen. That resulted in the left edge of the image on the screen being longer than the right edge, because the beam had a longer path to get to that side. So with the ViewSonic I tried to perform the same correction by moving the projector to the left, so that the beam was more exactly at 90 degrees coming into the screen. And that seemed to do the trick. The lack of a capability to adjust that on the projector would appear to be only an issue in an unusual case where the dimensions of your room force you to put the projector slightly to the right of left of dead center. As to set up, it took about 1 minute to plug it in and get it running, and perhaps 10 minutes fiddling around with focus, alignment, and the various settings like brightness and so forth in order to get a picture that appeared to be pretty optimum. I just have it on a floor stand, and for my situation that works just fine.

Having trouble setting up Apple TV
By CoyWolfNYC on Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017
From other people's reviews, it seem like AppleTV works splendidly with my projector ? Not sure why I'm having trouble: I've hooked up the HDMI cable, connecting the projector to my apple TV. But I can't "airpaly" my Macbook Pro to the projector screen. I keep getting "all signal searching" / "HDMI Source detect" and then a quick flash to a screen with nothing but static. If I'm lucky, airplay works for a split second: but then it disappears immediately. I'm giving this 3 stars and will increase it to 4 or 5 if it turns out that I'm doing something wrong. Anyone can give me some advice, that'd be great. Thanks
