High-quality mic; requires forethought to put on the 7506
By Mike G. on Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016
[EDIT - 9/21/2016] After a bit of thought, I realized that I tend to have knee-jerk reactions to items when they don't meet my exact expectations. Having worked in the service industry for some time, like 90% of customer complaints result from them not fully understanding what they are purchasing. Before I packaged the item up for a return, I decided I would give it one more go. Upon unpackaging it, I realized there were cable management clips included in the bag that the mounting dots came in. There was also an extra 3M pad to replace the one I had ruined removing the modmic from my headphones. I felt somewhat foolish as one of my major gripes was that the cable management options were lackluster. I still ended up with more extra cable than I would like, but I just plugged in my headphones to the back of the case instead of to the front, which has the double benefit of getting the extra spools of wire out of sight and having slightly better sound quality than my front ports. The end of the boom is also considerably more flexible than I originally thought, and I was able to place it in a way that it didn't interfere with the arms on my headphones. I am changing my review to 5 stars as a result. HOWEVER, the criticisms I mentioned in reply to the Antlion rep that replied to my original review still stand. Having a removable 3.5mm cable would make this feel much more high quality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to preface this review by stating that I will be returning this item. It is a great mic, feels high quality and I'd recommend it to others, but it does not suit my needs. Let me explain why. I bought these to use with the Sony MDR-7506 studio monitor headphones. I have had these headphones for about 5 years now, and they are honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made. Therefore, when my desk mic decided it didn't want to work anymore, I decided to look into the ModMic as a replacement. I didn't want to purchase a second headset to add to my desk clutter and I had seen plenty of good reviews on it. Unfortunately, while this may be a solution for many people, it is not for me as a result of the design of my headphones. When the headphones are closed, i.e. not on my head, the headband protrudes out from the side on a hinge, presumably so you could flip the headphone and press one cup to your ear like a DJ or something. This has the unfortunate side effect of colliding with the cable of the ModMic. I am unsure of why they designed it this way, but instead of the cable trailing straight down, a hard plastic casing flexes upward in an upwards U-shape before trailing off. You can see what I mean in the pictures. Therefore, if I take the headphones off, the band hinge flicks the ModMic off of the magnetized mount. Additionally, the 7506s have a looped cable, akin to a spring. I did not realize how difficult it would be to line up the ModMic cable with this cable. I was expecting to simply run the ModMic cable through the center of the spring, no problem. What I did not anticipate was how difficult it was to keep the cable at a good length to allow the "spring" to expand and contract as I move my head without having excessive extra cable trailing all over the place. These problems all add up to one thing: refund. However, this mic has excellent quality. I played with it a little bit before testing it out on Vocaroo and in Skype, and I was very pleased with the quality. My voice came through crisp and clean with no snapping or crackling. I did have to speak a little louder than anticipated, but fiddling with the sensitivity some more allowed me to speak at a comfortable level without picking up my keyboard and mouse sounds. The build quality is impressive and the inclusion of two mounts for two sets of headphones was great. I do wish they had included a Y-adapter so you can use it with your phone or video game console. I thought there was one included; I could have sworn I saw a picture on the page that showed it in the package. I must have been mistaken. Overall though, this is an excellent option for anyone who has a set of headphones that is not the MDR series.

Headphones damaged during removal of clasp, CS team went out of their way to satisfy after seeing Amazon review
By reeeeeviewer on Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2016
(Scroll all the way down for an update on the situation) I was initially going to give a slightly higher review but after seeing that Antlion doesn't care about the claims they make and lie to the customer I've decided against it. Since the company solely manufactures and sells ModMics I would say the company's practices would tie into the review of the product as well. I ordered this for my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (80 Ohm), which is without a doubt one of the most popular headphones out there along with the rest of the DT series, the MDR v6/7506, a few AKGs and pretty much the entire Sennheiser lineup. Based on this fact you would think they have extensively tested their product with the above headphones. When first attaching the magnetic clasp it's a little hard to get it rotated perfectly so the mic isn't too high or low and you don't have the option of swiveling it like with the attached boom microphones on headsets. You have two positions which are really high or regular. Because of this I had to remove the clasp and re-position it after rotating it to make the mic point where I wanted it to. When pulling the ModMic's magnetic clasp off the headphones it damaged the strip on the side that has the product name on it by ripping it out. I noticed after this that whenever I would pull the mic off the magnetic clasp it would tug on this part as well. Obviously since they damaged my headphones I returned the product. However, I contacted Antlion because they make claims that this won't happen. https://modmic.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/846654-basics-using-the-modmic-101 You can see on this website they make this claim: "As long as you don't take any extreme measures to pry off the Base Clasp (like using a knife or the claw end of a hammer), it should not damage the surface of your headphones in any way." You may be thinking "that isn't their website! hold on man!" but I should explain to you that this is just a platform of which they distribute information and it's linked on their official website in the footer. I contacted the company via email and explained the issue, along with sending an image of the damaged headphones and Louis from Antlion told me this: "Please provide a photo of both sides of the headphones so we can compare the two sides to each other. Also, exactly where on the headphones was the Base Clasp was attached t?" This means that he isn't familiar with one of the most popular headphones out there, which is surprising. He should have been able to see what the damage was without me sending further images. In addition to this, he could have simply looked up the product online to see what a normal side looks like. I sent the image he requested as well as a modified version of the one I originally sent which clearly marks where the damage was done. He then told me this: "Thank you for the updated info. For the side you attached and removed the Boom Clasp - I do see that the smooth area of the headphones (the strip with the name of the headphones on it) is a bit separated. Our Warranty only covers the ModMic and its accessories, as stated here. I apologize, but we will not be able to cover what happened here. We do state that removing the Base Clasp will not damage your headphones, but in the context of the sticky gray foam being hard to remove or leaving a residue or mark on the headphones." Sorry Louis, but you're wrong. When your company states "pry off the Base Clasp (like using a knife or the claw end of a hammer)" it's obviously an implication to gouging, scratching or otherwise damaging the surface of the headphone. The worst part is that stating "it should not damage the surface of your headphones in any way" is explicitly stating that this shouldn't happen. The company refuses to stand by their product after it damaged expensive high-end headphones. For the product itself: Pros: - Sounds fine - Case is really nice - Build quality seems fine but I only had it for a night so I don't know how well it holds up to frequent use Cons: - Crappy company who doesn't care if they damage your headphones - Mute is too high up on the cord - Not enough cable management things included - Once you attach the clasp there's pretty much no amount of customization of the positioning of the mic that leaves it in a usable state. UPDATE: 7/27/2016: It's hard to figure out where to rate something in a situation like this. I would say a company could only slightly influence a review after deciding on the product. When the product is reviewed negatively and you feel the customer support is unwilling to talk things out I think it's easy to rate 1/5. 3/5 will hopefully be accurate and fair after this new information because after all, removing the clasp by hand did rip apart the side of my headphones which aren't some cheap Radioshack things. However, after one of their CS agents saw this review they asked me to contact them (as you can see in the comments) I did so. Rob from their team offered an independent refund from the Amazon one via PayPal for the cost of the AntLion. They've also updated their knowledge-base to not indicate that it won't damage the headphones in any way. Thank You Rob.
