love onkyo
By Barry J. Gervais on Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2014
Great sound, I'm replacing a TX-NR 616 that I've had for a year and a half. I replaced because I want to be ready for atmos. I was a little concerned that audyssey is being replaced with Accu-EQ. But I read that onkyo and Dolby worked together to develop it. Set up was very easy and after room calibration sound is great, one thing I did use was a db meter to get to subs at 75db which helped a lot. The reason I used a meter, when you first set up with Accu-EQ you get a test tone for the sub but no indication what the db is, got them to 75 and proceeded with the rest of the set up very easy. One thing I did was place the hockey puck Mic on my tripod and placed it in my main listening position.... The only issue I have is odd when the receiver is in stand by picture passes to the TV but no sound tried everything but can't get it to work with my TV I have directv genie > receiver > Samsung PN 51F 5500 Which is odd is it works fine when I watch a blu-Ray through the receiver when it's in stand by. It must be some kind of handshake between directv genie and the receiver, I think it maybe that the genie is not cec don't know just a guess. This receiver has great sound and I can't wait till atmos... Update 8/17/14 Not sure what I did but now when the receiver is on stand by my directv genie passes through video and audio. I would like to report that all is well when the TX-NR 737 sound and picture passes through when it's in stand by. The reason I like this feature is when I'm not home and someone who wants just to watch TV works perfectly.. Update 8/28/2014 I just noticed something very peculiar I have a samsung PN51F5500 smart tv it has HBOGO when I replaced my TX-NR 616 with this new TX-NR 737 I started getting no access to HBOGO keeps asking me to reactivate the device I try typing in the code and it keeps saying can't activate at this time. I unhooked the receiver tried HBOGO without the receiver connected to the TV HBOGO works fine??? To make a long story short I hooked everything back up changed in video in pictures mode to Bypass and bingo now HBOGO works fine, if I put it in custom mode HBOGO Doesn't work. Just thought I would share that if anyone has the same issue OK I came home today tried HBOGO no go so what I speculated saying the receiver need to be in bypass mode is not my problem. But there is something going on when I try to access HBOGO when the receiver in stand by it works fine then I turn the receiver on and all is well. So I'm still trying to figure it out. Update 9/9/14 Well everything is working great right now I just want to let you know. I was messing with my smart strip and accidentally shut it off anyway I shut it down with everything on oops.... after everything booted back up everything works flawlessly go figure I guess it just needed a reset. Update 9/24/2014 I posted a question on AVS Forums about AccuEq here is my question and response from ONKYO. the reason i even asked this question was because all the critics about onkyo. MY Quote: Originally Posted by bargervais View Post I'm a loyal onkyo owner I'm not very clear on what or why all the negative posts are in these forums about Accu-EQ I have a new TX-NR 737 and it sounds great and when I tell people that I like the sound I'm told it's useless because it lacks audyssey, because it doesn't EQ the fronts. Can you enlighten us on what accuEq does, and why the switch from audyssey. Thanks for your response in advance. ONKYO USA's reply AccuEQ was developed to follow the concept of Emotion.Delivered., where our goal is to maximize the characteristics of your own speakers. To help bring out the natural characteristic of your speakers, we developed Auto EQ using FIR filters with high-grade 32-bit DSP to reproduce this concept. There are advantages and disadvantages to any room calibration system. Many calibration systems apply equalization to all channels. This in turn results in your speaking producing an "Equalized Sound" not necessarily the natural sound of your speakers. The main benefit of AccuEQ is that it does not apply an Equalized effect to Front channels and Subwoofer. This allows the natural sound of your speakers to be heard while taking into consideration things such as room furnishings, speaker distance and speaker type. We will continue to refine AccEQ as we move forward to make it the best calibration system available. For most of existing room correction software available today, the goal seems to uniformly flatten the equalization of the sound, which enhances balanced audio but loses its dynamic qualities. The reason why we have the EQ setting bypassed is to reproduce this dynamic value where it was supposed to be reproduced by the fronts. But for the center, we do perform equalization so it will make the dialog cleaner and stand out. So our AccuEQ is designed to maximize the dynamics and the clarity and fill the room with sound where content creator and speaker manufacture have intended. Just another plus on the AccuEQ is that when there are 96khz recorded signal in 5.1ch or 7.1ch BD disc, it is available to reproduce 96kHz without down converting to 48kHz. This will also help us deliver the accuracy of created content. I know I have provided a lot of information: but it results in the same- AccuEQ doesn't enhance the audio from your FRONT speakers- but it allows these speakers to broadcast the audio content as intended by the speaker manufacturer. This is evident when testing with audiophile quality FRONT speakers- as the speaker is better able to reproduce the true audio without equalization. This really isn't a scary or uncharted topic- as many other AV manufacturers have utilized their own proprietary calibration systems as well. If you have any further questions: we are here to assist you. Best Regards Sept. 30th update Updated to atmos on the 29th using top front ceiling speakers positioned mid way from FRONTS and surrounds 5.2.2 initially was listening in dolby surround upmix I'm very pleased with how it sounds. Then today I got transformers 4 blu-ray it has an Atmos sound and OMG VERY nice sound. Not so much the movie I got transformers to see what Atmos sounded like and was not disappointed.

Probably Got A Lemon
By Todd H. on Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2015
I've had Onkyo gear in the past and it's always performed flawlessly so I had great expectations for the NR737. The majority of the reviews for it were highly favorable so I was confident the out of box experience would be great. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major disappointment. After a firmware update, a dozen or so resets and re-configs and a couple of hours of wasted time, the unit would not pass audio to my sub woofer at all and only very weak audio to the front main speakers. Also, the ARC channel didn't function properly with my Samsung 3D Smart TV (no audio at all through the ARC channel). On top of that, the remote would stop working with the receiver in the middle of doing a setup and itself had to be reset multiple times. My current set up is very simple - a pair of Polk Audio RM2300's for the front mains and a Fluance DB150-MA sub. I'll be setting up a more comprehensive surround system later on with bi-amp towers, etc. This system was working perfectly with an older Yamaha receiver. Oddly enough, the unit would pass proper levels through the speaker level calibration section of the setup menus. However, I had to turn it up practically all the way to get even weak audio through the front mains from any source - tuner, TV, BD player. I strongly suspect the unit I got was a lemon - it happens. The feature set of the NR737 is exactly what I wanted for my future surround setup but I'm not sure I want to take another chance on a second unit. Fortunately, Amazon's return/refund policy is excellent so this one's going back for a refund.
