Very Cool!
By Savvy Shopper on Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2015
I love, love, love my Samsung Gear Fit! It is the coolest thing ever! Now, I’m no workout guru or some extreme techie, but for this being my first techie watch that connects to my cell phone, this is the Coolest!!! It is extremely user friendly and easy to learn. It is sharp looking and a lot of fun. It fits nice on the wrist too! But first, let me say that I bought the Samsung Gear Fit for the purpose of tracking my sleep, which to be honest, only tracks movement, so it is limited, but it gives you the general idea of your sleep pattern, which when viewed on your phone shows your peak times of movement. Very Cool! The other cool thing is that it will let you know when you get an email, text, call or voicemail. You can see who the communication is from and can read the messages, plus you can respond with short prerecorded messages. The standard replies are on your phone or you can create your own. And, if you get a call on your cell phone, you can reject it without having to dig your phone out of your purse or pocket. Very Cool! These weren't the reasons why I got my Gear Fit, but since I work where cell phones are only permitted in the break room, I now know when I get an important message that I have to respond to. Also, the Bluetooth goes far. I charge my phone overnight in the kitchen on the first floor, but still get updates on my Gear Fit in my bedroom on the second floor. And, much too my surprise, after a few days I thought, the only thing missing on this thing was the weather. Well, after having more time to play with it, there are different clock options, one showing a current weather icon (sun, cloud, moon, etc.) with the temperature, which is updated when your phone is updated. WooHoo, that made my day! I haven’t used the workout options, yet. Nor, have I used the media controller, but it also seems very cool. The heart rate monitor has only been a beat off from the monitor that you use on your finger. And, the phone finder is a nice added bonus. Now, I read some of the reviews and I see folks complaining about the chrome peeling off. I've had my watch for exactly a month and have worn it constantly. The chrome has not peeled; however, I don't wear the watch in the shower and I push it up my wrist when I'm in water, such as when washing dishes. So, I think a little discretion has to be used to keep it looking good as new. I do have to say that it sits a little high and I have bumped it on a wall, but no scratches or broken glass. In fact, the only scratches are on the Samsung silver logo on the bottom of the Gear Fit band from having my wrist on my desk. Now, there are a couple minor things that would be a nice change: 1) It’s a bit of a pain to confirm that your deleting a message from your Gear Fit each time you do; i.e., you hit the trash can to delete a message, then you have to hit the check-mark to confirm that it will be deleted. I think that if you accidentally delete a message, it’s no big deal since the message stays on your phone. If anything, it should give you the option in the settings to choose if you want to confirm that you’re deleting a message or maybe give it the five-second rule, like it’s done on my Samsung Mini, to cancel the deletion. 2) I love the countdown timer, but I wish you could set more than one time at a time. For instance, I get a 5-minute break, 15-minute break and a 30-minute lunch. It would be really cool to be able to save more than one setting at a time. Say, that you could preset three and then choose the one you want when you need it, or give preset options such as 5, 15, 30, etc., but with the ability to change it by a minute with the +/- key to suit specific needs. For instance, I get a 15 minute break, but I would want the alarm to go off at 13 so I have time to get back to my station; the option would be something like, preset to 15, hit minus key twice to get to 13. Or, maybe have the ability to set timer options on your phone with the ability to choose the one you want to use like you can when choosing a reply. Now, I realize this isn't for fitness, but you have to admit, through the course of the day, I have to change the timer to 15, then to 30, then to 15 and last to 5. Hitting the +/- key 30 times is, well, a hassle. Plus, should I be doing sprints during my workout, I don't want to have to change the timer each time to switch back and forth. 3) And last, the only other thing missing is an alarm on the clock! It would be nice to set an alarm (and, while you’re at it, maybe a snooze). Given how watches are programmed these days, I think this would be a really easy fix. After all, it is a watch. So, guys & gals at Samsung, maybe these tiny adjustments can be made in the next upgrade. Now, wouldn’t that be Really Coooool!!!

All show, but no go. Great screen, poor fitness tracker
By dcbaseball on Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2015
My never ending search for the perfect Smartwatch / Fitness tracking hybrid continues. So far I have tried in order..LG G Watch R, Samsung Gear 2, Asus Zenwatch, Fitbit Surge, Sony Smartwatch 3, Sony Smartband Talk, Striiv Fusion and now the Samsung Gear Fit. First the good. The screen is so nice. Brilliant color, clear and crisp. All notifications work, including Google Hangouts, Emails, etc. Only issue is that is a pain at times to delete them all. It takes a few taps. Android Wear does it much better and easier. Battery life is ok for me, 2 -3 days. The price at $119 has come way down and now it is a very good value. The heart rate monitor when tested seemed fairly accurate. The bad: This is a fitness band that can’t track daily calories burned. You can only track calories while exercising or walking. You burn a lot of calories sleeping or even breathing, but Gear Fit does not track them. So you can’t really tell how many calories you can eat to balance it against daily calorie burn. Also, natively they Gear Fit does not track gym workouts. Only Walking, Running, Cycling and Hiking. But they do have an integration with Endomondo which does a decent job of tracking my Crossfit workouts for calories burned. But Endomondo does not integrate with S Health where the calories burned through walking, running, etc or stored. So you really have to use 2 apps to tracking your active calories. And like I said you still will be missing your other non-active calories burned. Sleep tracking is manual and does not give you much info at all. Just when you are motionless or not. There also is no Smart Alarm to wake you when you are in a light sleep. You can use the cell phone alarm and the Gear Fit will pick it up though. Overall: This will probably be returned too. Comfort is great. Notifications are great. Android Wear is better for notifications as you can respond to Google Hangouts texts via voice or auto text response on the watch. With the Gear Fit you can only use the canned response for true SMS texts. I use Hangouts so this doesn’t help me. The screen is the best of any fitness band or smartwatch I have tried. But the poor set up of fitness and sleep tracking to me is a show stopper on a Fitness band. Based on all the Smartwatches/Fitness Bands I have tried here is my current ranking from best to worst for my needs. 8. Sony Smartband Talk – Good for calorie tracking. Sleep tracking in automatic. The talking aspect on the band itself is nice. But notifications would not work consistently on it. They would come initially and then stop. No idea why. Sony Support did not know either. Also, the e-Ink display is impossible to read in low light and the text is very small. 7. Striiv – Ranked higher than the Sony Smart Talk Band because it is half the price. Notifications are ok, but the fitness tracking aspect is lousy. 6. Samsung Gear 2 – way too big to work out with. Tizen is cumbersome and not as easy to navigate as Android Wear. Camera and speaker on the phone for call is nice. Also, can’t respond to google hangouts texts with Tizen 5. FItbit Surge – Notifications are limited to SMS and Call Alerts. No email, no calendar, no google hangouts, etc. It is even cumbersome to navigate to them when you do get SMS texts. It is good for tracking gym workouts and heart rate. Auto Sleep tracking is nice, but the data doesn’t give you much info. Black and white screen is not as nice as other color ones or as clear as the e-Ink on the Smart talk Band. Great battery life. Never did use the GPS. Continuous heart rate monitor is nice, but it really underestimates it during the workouts. 4. Asus Zenwatch – Looks nice, but too nice to work out with seriously. Also, don’t like the awkward way it measures hear rate. See Sony Smartwatch 3 below for Android Wear Review. 3. LG G Watch R – Better battery life and heart rate monitor than the Asus Zenwatch. Cheap band. Also, too big and bulky to workout with. 2. Samsung Gear Fit – Beautiful screen! Very good on notifications. But the fitness tracking aspect is lousy. Can’t track daily calories in total. Link with Endomondo saves the device for being down to #5 on the list. 1. Sony Smartwatch 3 – true Android Wear Smartwatch. Can respond to Google Hangout texts via voice or canned text response in Android Wear. Best battery life on an Android Wear watch. Able to store music on the phone and with GPS you really can run without your phone. It is more of sportswatch, so good to workout with. Sony Lifelog is good for tracking daily calories. But you still need several less than efficient apps to track gym work outs. It would be good if Lifelog was better. Sleep tracking does not work in Lifelog with the Smartwatch 3. At first Sony told me it did and said I needed to update the firmware. When doing this it broke the watch and it would not reboot. Had to return it and get a new one. Then Sony told me that Life Log does not actually track sleep with the Smartwatch 3. The new one I ordred did not vibrate for some reason and returned it too. Decided to hold off on ordering a 3rd one. And now the price has come down..so this is definitely the Android Wear watch to get if you are going to go with that platform. I would like to try the MS Band or maybe the Basis Peak, but neither are available now.
