Great Picture Quality!
By Odawgg on Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2014
We just purchased this after our old Sony Wega LCD projection started to get the blue haze. What an upgrade! As other reviewers have mentioned, the 55-inch model only comes with the Samsung panel, so no panel lottery with this size. Color/blacks are great. I recommend the settings on the rtings.com website. I tried a few others that used the 'movie' preset, but it always looked dull and bland to me. The one on the rtings.com website uses the 'standard' preset as a basis and I think it looks best for this panel. The only cons with this set are minor. If the living room lights are out, I can see a tiny bit of light bleed in the bottom corners of the screen. Not sure what causes this. It's like two tiny spotlights shining upwards. Applying pressure on the frame at the corner makes it slightly worse, but pulling on the metal bar underneath the tv makes it slightly better. I think it is probably uneven pressure at the corners. Again, this is ONLY noticeable when all of the lights in the room are out and the backlight level is high. I was initially concerned about it, but took a look at the backlight bleed screenshot of the same model at rtings.com, which they scored it 9.0/10, and noticed the same two spotlights in that image...so it is probably a common problem with his model. No biggie though. A lamp or two in the room makes it almost invisible. I tried to loosen the screws to alleviate the pressure, but it did not help. The only other con is that all four corners are slightly dark. It's one of those things that you notice when the set is in your living room, but not at the store. It really is only noticeable when the screen is all white. I went back to the stores and viewed their floor models, and lo and behold they all have dark corners. I just never noticed it at the store. It's a common problem with edge-lit TVs. I don't have much to say about the smart functions as I almost never use them. Just use a Roku or Fire TV/stick as they are much better designed for playing apps and streaming content. As far as gaming, this TV does have a game mode (it is located in the general-setup menu, and NOT in the picture menu) which cuts the lag in half. I didn't notice the difference at first, but if you use a wii and point the wiimote at the television, you'll notice that the cursor lags a lot when it is not on game mode, but is really precise when game mode is on. HOWEVER, game mode disables auto motion plus, which I find very useful for some games. Why? because it makes a 30fps game look like a 60fps game. Just turn Auto Motion Plus to "Smooth" and your xbox 360 will look like an xbox one. Maybe that's a little over exaggerated, as the technology isn't perfect (objects that move too fast have a weird blur artifact) but games like Dead Space and Dirt 2/3 look phenomenal with this mode turned on. Auto Motion Plus is one of those things that most people like to turn off as it gives that soap opera effect to television shows and movies. I usually turn it off, but I have it on for some video games, and also if I want to see something close to the Hobbit HFR version on my tv. It's not perfect, but it is a cool technology that is fun to play around with. It is a great looking TV and the price is right. Plasmas may look better in the dark, but they are susceptible to burn in and fading brightness over time. OLEDs are awesome, but way too expensive at this point in time. If you are looking for a great TV on a budget, this is a fantastic option. Sound is meh, but that is understandable with such a thin television. Just get a set of speakers and you'll be much happier. UPDATE 6/2/15: Still very satisfied with this television. I don't notice the dark corner vignette anymore and the spotlight issue is only a nuisance when I actively look for it. The color is amazing when looking dead on...it does fade slightly when looking at it from the side, but again it's a problem of the technology. I've seen televisions look a lot worse, and I had to 'really' look to see the color fade. Just discovered Samsung's AllShare feature to stream movies from the computer to your television. Very nice! And seriously, experiment with auto-motion plus if you are a gamer. It does increase the lag slightly, but 30fps games like Dragon Age Inquisition look great with it, feeling like a 60 fps game.

Great picture, Netflix & other apps don't work, stand is garish...
By Susie on Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2014
We just received this TV on April 4th. My initial reaction was flimsy packaging, lightweight TV and all plastic (including the stand) construction. The chrome finish stand is horrible. It and the small chrome band running along the bottom of the TV is reflective and totally distracts your eye when viewing a program. This is especially true in the dark as it reflects the light from the screen. Connections are simple enough and setup was straightforward. There is no paper manual and the e-manual on the screen is awkward because you can't simultaneously read it's instructions AND make the necessary adjustments in the on-screen menus. Also, the "eco sensor" keeps dimming the picture and then it will spontaneously snap back to bright again. This is very annoying but the feature can be turned off (if you can find the menu option to do so-it's in a drop down submenu offscreen). However, my major disappointment was the smart hub. Not one single app worked! Every app was grayed out and when you tried to select one it simply responded by saying "This function is not supported". I can use the browser so I know that my internet connection is sound. It's definitely a firmware/software issue. After 5 hours of setting/resetting every possible variable the Samsung techs finally concluded that a service tech needs to come to my house and investigate the problem hands on. They then told me that I had only 1 month left on my warranty. When I told them that I just bought the TV today they insisted that I needed to send them a photo of my receipt to prove it before they would extend it until April 2015. This despite the fact that my serial number told them that it was just manufactured in March 2014! I had sworn off ever purchasing a Samsung TV again after buying a Netflix ready set back in 2009 only to find that Samsung did not acquire the necessary licenses from Netflix and so that app never worked for the life of the TV (which subsequently died just out of warranty and would have cost more to repair than to buy a new one). Now I'm afraid that I am in a similar boat with this TV so I will more than likely be returning it for a full refund. If you are buying this TV for the Smart features (Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, etc.)I'd wait to see if they can get them to work properly and consistently. As for the stand I guess you could always sand it and paint it black but that seems to be a little extreme for a brand new TV.
