Great sounding and great looking speakers!
By KirkinSanMarcos on Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2014
These are beautifully finished, audiophile quality loudspeakers on a budget. They sound terrific (I'm an audio engineer), very clean and transparent sound. They are not as wide as typical floor standing speakers, even the next model up in this line, so they're great for a smaller living room surround system. They weigh about 50 lbs, so they're easy to move around, but the little feet at the bottom make them very stable, even on carpet. I've seen these speakers listed for more with 14 - 21 days shipping and was about to buy them, when I thought to check Amazon! Not only was the price better, but the 2-day shipping with Prime was unbelievable. I know these are an out-going model, but speakers don't age like other audio gear does. These are replacing my 15 year old Paradigm bookshelf monitors that were irreparably damaged recently. I know I'll be happy with these speakers for decades. Great for both movies in a surround system and as a stand-alone stereo pair for music. I listen to hard rock, but I imagine jazzers would like the clarity these speakers produce.

In my humble opinion the Icon series of speakers especially the KF-26 you are only paying for the name brand and cabinet minus the woofers, I personally love the cabinet’s elegant look but that's where high praise ends. I'm not an Audiophile just and average person whom enjoy good quality sound and hoping someday I can build my own. Before I bought these from a local dealer I was listening to a modified pair of Yamaha NS-7390, I’ve gutted the tweeter and woofer and installed a MCM 55-1545 6-1/2 Carbon Fiber woofer and a cheap Motorola dispersion horn tweeter from Radio Shack i bought over 10 years ago. Of course I had to seal the port and re-tune/install another port for this woofer spec/cabinet Vas and experiment with damping. Once I got everything tweaked I’ve heard the best bass, mid-bass I have ever heard. No boominess, super tight bass, vocals was clear with details but somewhat recessed and had a decently small sound-stage enough for me to be happy. A few months ago I added the Peerless 830990 6-1/2 woofer to the cabinet which added more depth to the vocals and increased my sound-stage but lost some deep bass but overall sound was still good. I decided to upgrade on some real speakers since experimenting on speakers netted me decent sound for what I payed but thought maybe there’s something 10 times better, since I'm no expert on these matters and decided to spend money on someone whom was. I purchased these at a discount ($280 a pair) thinking what a huge steal, I got home disconnected my experimentals from my Denon AVR-2808 and connected these. What a huge let down, Treble was good but missing details, midrange was ok but again missing details, mid-bass and bass was there, a tons more then what I had but was not tight and slight boomy with resonance. My experimental is Frankenstein compared to these speakers, 36Hz and below is a complete joke. I turned my Denon Vol up to -45db and ran the NCH SW tone generator at 20Hz on the KF-26, no sound, 25Hz no sound, anything from the mid 30's on down is completely no sound. I admit not many speakers are rated to such low frequency rating but I’m sure they will be somewhat audible to the ear once volume is turned up. My experimentals is audible at 20Hz on up but of course not perfect. For a pair of speakers with a msrp $700 price tag on them they don’t sound like their worth even at $280, they just look like it, I think the main weakness of these speakers are the woofers, Ive seen this woofer on Ebay and their worth looks $15 at best. Oh well my search continues but in the meantime back to my experimentals, and back to the store for a return...
