OMG! Replaced my HD20 with this
By K. Johnson on Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2013
OK, so it did cost more than the HD20 that it replaces. I could have done without the internal speakers as I have a real sound system. I guess that they would have a use for some reason but I cannot think of one. The brightness has been greatly improved. I can ow see the 120" screen in average lighting. There is absolutely no way that it is bright enough for bright light but this is very impressive. This is the bright version. I can't speak to lamp life, but the HD20 that it replaces was very very good at lamp life. I got about 35% longer life than predicted. Lamp brightness changed noticeably when replacing the lamp so I suspect this one will be the same. I retired the HD20 due to color wheel failure. I hope this model does not suffer the same issue. I replaced the color wheel in the 20 and still o luck. But it worked flawlessly for almost 8000 hours. The 3d is pretty astounding. I did not buy it for that reason but itis a really nice addition. You have to purchase the transmitter separately but it is nice. Now if there was more content! The unit actually generates 3d from 2d and actually makes it a convincing attempt. Far from perfect but the process is impossible at best if you think about it. A lot of reviews talk about rainbow. I can't see it. Hurt my eyes trying to see it. Glad I can't. But I can see the full 1080 HD! My PC HDMI output at 1920x1080 is stellar on this unit, games are truly impressive on this device at full native resolution. Don't be fooled by others that state input resolutions but they can't generate pixel to pixel at this resolution. This one can and does. Some say there is focus issues at far corners vs the center. I guess that I can note that most on small text from PC generated screens. If the center text is perfectly in focus, the time on the task bar can be noted as very slightly out of focus. This can be minimized by hitting the focus somewhere in the middle. I have to concentrate VERY hard to actually see it. An for even high def tv, you would have to be crazy to note it at all. Ya, I like perfect stuff, but I see the same thing on 3k machines. Sound... What sound? I can note the fan when movies go totally silent. And I have to pay attention to actually here it. I love this beast. So do my friends that rue the prices they paid for their machines that have little to show for it. I can buy three of these for the price of something that performs as good or worse in some cases. Keep this clean, vacuumed out monthly, and watch the heat and this puppy will make you very happy for years. The ROI is awesome compared to more expensive units and this sucker is bright! If you are on the fence then it is probably because you can't believe the price. In that case, jump off and you will be very happy. Oh ya! At night with my theater curtains closed and just a couple LED night lights, the light levels from this device blow away the local IMAX. So you can watch this with Orval light and really enjoy it in the dark.

Good for office or budget entry theater projector, but it is not 3500 lumens.
By GMac on Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2014
The specs sound great, but this is not a 3500 lumen projector. This is a good entry level projector though. It has good color and a sharp 1080p image. The blacks are more gray, sometimes it washes or blends some color. But it is not 3500 lumens, it's about the same brightness as my Epson Powerlite 3010 with 2200 lumens. It does ok with some sunlight coming through a window or have some light lamps on, but not that great. For 3500 lumens, it should be brighter and the colors hold stronger with ambient light. I also noticed quality is less than Epson's projectors, and some features are lacking. Like horizontal keystone, but not really needed if you mount your projector in the center. Also the mounting bracket holes take an impossible small machine screws (I was afraid they wouldn't be strong enough to hold the projector on the ceiling, but it worked), I had to drive to Ace Hardwear twice to get the right machine screws. Anyway, I have an Epson 3010, Epson Ex7230, and Optima Pico 500 lumen projectors. I've believe this Optoma projector will be a good start for someone on a budget. It does have good qualities and it's fairly simple to set up. But it still lacks the refinement and quality to provide average reproduction of picture for movies. This would be more suited for office or maybe playing games. But I know that Epson has better quality, brighter image, easier setup, and cheaper price. So, if your gifted with this projector (that would be nice! Lol) keep it, it's good enough. But if your using your hard earned money, go for an Epson. I Do Not recommend this projector (almost a draw though) to my family and friends.
