Less is more? Features are priceless.

This is becoming my "go to" solution for livestock birthing surveillance. (usable for webcam event coverage too) Pros: 1. Pan-Tilt 2. "Foscam US" iOS & Android AP 3. MJPEG style stream & camera firmware 4. thus better cross browser compatibility (mobile, safari, chrome viewer options) 5. 12v (nice in a truly remote install pinch) 6. Wireless built in (or wire) 7. Pleasing appearance mounted on a house (see 4 below) 8. Outdoor all in one solution Ability to change camera's ports, email motion detect, ftp to a server, multiple user profiles to admin, control or simply view are all well thought out added features that make subscriptions and DVR's not required to use. Cons: 1. Wireless range is bad. (Pair it with a Ubiquiti, ex NS2M, Hotspot AP or AirGateway in a 9x6x4 enclosure...you will need one for exposed wires) 2. Video quality is not that of the "98xx" H.264 line (but H.264 requires Windows & Active-X) 3. No sound (when available, sound is not that great on other models) 4. So far comes in random assorted colors (white, almond) depending on "sold by" 5. Clones? (so far so good IF fulfilled by Amazon & Prime) has happened on another model even then. 6. Foscam APP is a bit buggy* 7. Tilting to see the horizon is tough (so mount high or tilt back slightly when mounting) 8. Not great in bright light (not for ski slope monitoring ;-) 9. NOT passive 12-24v POE powered (could use 12v and a injector/splitter trick I guess. Other models can be 5v so careful) 10. You must expose at least a "guest" level account in any public webcam url (assuming you do not use PHP & GD or use FTP functions to hide it) *If your camera does not work with the "Foscam US" app, try one of the MJPEG bullets configs instead (& vice versa). Oddly it WILL pan & tilt if if choosing a bullet model! Foscam is a wild mix of firmwares, still image & stream urls. The ones using the MJPEG interfaced however includes http://user:password@cameraip:port/live.htm which is priceless for quick user moving picture bookmarks. Setting up guest access credentials limits exposing hardware to hackers. All Foscams have some form of RTSP stream access (using http & same port) so the VLC player is an option for people who need stream access. Lots of searching the web then trial and error is needed. For me the MJPEG model (89xx) has more ease of access and features guys want vs the newer (98xx) H.264 versions. My guys like this better then the FI9828w for these solutions here. Sure the FI9828w does have sound (2 way audio) capabilities, better video resolution & pans a bit higher to the horizon. I have one FI9828w for a demo unit but 5 & counting of the FI8919w are what guys have me install so far. We fill in fixed points with bullet version (non pan-tilt) either wider angle or narrower long distance field of view as needed (less money, fewer parts to fail, less optics to get scratched) My rock solid brand was originally not night vision nor do any of those "move" (pan-tilt) and although using wire or adding WiFi was required the worst change was that competitor firmware got bloated yet stripped so an expensive and bandwidth unfriendly NVR add on became required. Although these are a problematic and untested second choice... & despite 100% of the lesser legacy gear is still in service... even pan-tilt, weak WiFi and a confused phone app are a minor work around. Choosing only "fulfilled by Amazon" & Prime minimizes the risk and makes it ez to fix if "clones happen". Basically 4 stars for the camera, 5 stars if "fulfilled by Amazon".

Took delivery of the Foscam FI8919W. Set up was a breeze and everything was looking good. That is until I tried to get the WiFi working on it. The camera would not scan the WiFi networks available. I tried two hours myself, with no luck. I just put another Foscam exterior WiFi camera into service two weeks ago with no problems. So I called Foscam Tech support. I was #20 in the list and waited 50 minutes to speak with a tech support rep. He ran me through a bunch of restarts, reboots, etc. He logged into mey computer and tried to make it work himself. His final words..... you need to return it to the place you purchased it from. It is defective. Okay, I'm sending it back today and followed it with another order for the same camera from Amazon. We'll see how round 2 goes. I really want to make this work, because the quality of the picture was fantastic when I was using it in the wired mode. Just couldn't get WiFi to work.
