Glad I found this, this is how theater bass should sound
By doesitreallymatter873 on Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2019
I first picked up the popular highest rated Polk sub woofer here at Amazon, since it had amazing reviews on how good it was, I have a pretty small living room, have a VSX-823 Pioneer receiver supplying the surround sound for my theater with a single subwoofer out jack, that im using a SINGLE to RCA cable to supply signal to this guy. Same as I used with the Polk, I had a old Aiwa subwoofer in the 90s, which was my first experience with adding bass to TV and Movies, which was amazing back then and to this day (is the standard) on how (I think) it should sound during a movie and tv. Well I may have got a defective Polk, since it sounded like a rattling vibrating noisy bad car subwoofer. My placement of the subwoofer is back corner near the back of the couch, (hoping you feel it in your chest like a good car subwoofer), lined up with 5 surround speakers that fill 4 corners and directly under the TV itself, you can hear video game characters flanking you on all sides as they walk around your character. But the Polk didn't have any punch at all, sounded like a damaged vibrating speaker. I returned the Polk, and starting researching subwoofers more. The Polk was a front firing subwoofer also has a bigger woofer driver I think 10 vs this Pioneer's 8 or 7? my old Aiwa I believe had a 6 or 7 driver but while watching Point break you could feel the waves crash in the room, thats the feeling Im trying to get back, that the Polk failed at. Maybe bigger drivers work better in huge rooms, maybe my room is too small, I thought I would try a down firing subwoofer (means the subwoofer speaker is facing the floor) vs front like the Polk. Seems logical (at least to me) that facing the floor would create a better rumble then out to the side, even though all the experts say it don't matter. Well long story short, this sounds as awesome as the old Aiwa (better I believe) since in those days I had it connected to a Audio out of a small bookshelf radio vs today's 5.1 receivers . I was watching Lord Of The Rings and The IT 2019 series movies, you can feel the footsteps of the horses and the clown, its amazing, the cats think there is people in the house its so real. This is how sub woofers should sound, but maybe I just got a bad Polk. "I love this Pioneer Subwoofer". For reference sake I would say my living room is maybe 600-700 Square feet, like I said its small, if you have a huge living room you may need 2 or bigger subwoofers. I also didn't have the choice of putting the subwoofer in front like many advise you too, my theater cabinet spans almost the entire front of the living room , no space for me to put it in front near the TV, I had to put it back end of the living room, which it seems to work great back there. Highly recommend if your using it for Theater and TV or gaming purposes.

Would have been great if not for the humming issue...
By XpertJoey on Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2016
Bought this subwoofer on the recommendation from the Wirecutter. For this being an 8 inch sub in a very compact enclosure the sub really packs a deep punch. Performs very well with movies and music producing very clean and tight bass. My two issues with the subwoofer are a humming sound emiting out of the subwoofer wether it is receiving a signal or not. It still makes the humming sound while in standby mode. Seems to be a known issue with other reviewers stating the same problem. From what I read the first generation sub suffered from this issue as well, so this is totally unacceptable from Pioneer to let this issue persist. The second complaint is the bright blue light on the front of the unit that makes it very distracting to watch anything at night. The light can be fixed with a bit of electrical tape but because of the hum I have to return the subwoofer. I would give this subwoofer 5 stars if it didn't have the humming issue.
