Best suction cup holder. Period!
By waldo15 on Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2013
I have been using suction cup holders with my tech gadgets since back in the day (2005 that is). I have always been in search for the perfect holder and up until before finding this U-Grip holder the search was futile. But the U-GRIP is by far the best holder that I have had up to this day. First off, the mechanism to hold the phone is the best available out there. Is a clamp with two fingers that has an internal spring that keeps it from opening. However because it is only internally held by a spring there are no set intervals for the clamp to be opened or closed, so you do get the capability of having infinite width options for your gadgets. The spring is strong, very strong indeed. You can get the phone in and out in a one hand operation as long as you use your phone as a lever. Also the fingers of the clamp have this high grip rubber coating that makes it almost impossible for the phone to go anywhere. And seriously, the clamp holds the device in place no matter what is going on on the road. The clamp is secured to the base via a ball/screw joint. This gives you infinite tilting and rotating possibilities. Once you screw the joint, the phone will stay in the orientation you choose and never sag, but if you need to make an adjustment (say, rotate 90 for navigation) you can do so without having to reach on the back to loosen the screw. I have been tilting and rotating the holder back and forth several times and the joint screw is still holing everything in its place without me having to re-tighten every time. The suction cup of the U-GRIP deserves its own review and 5 star grading. The material of the suction cup is of a high tack rubber that literally does not slip. When I first got it I literally thought the base was covered in glue, as touching it would get my finger stuck. The lever you use to enable the suction cup action is discrete and powerful. Just release it, adjust your holder and then engage the lever. It hides behind the base and you forget it is even there, unlike other holders that have a lever that sticks out prominently and they can easily be lifted by accident, specially if you are running a cable to the holder and using the lever for keeping the cable in place. And the power of the suction? Well, I put it on my dashboard mount holder and it has not moved since the day I got it. Bear in mind with other holders any changes in temperature make the suction loose its grip so whenever I started moving my phone would simply fly off the dash because there was no suction left in the holder. With the U-GRIP I have not had any of that and the temperature variations in my area have been relatively extreme (from mild wet weather to extremely hot weather). And lastly, because the clamp is relatively thin, your phone buttons and ports are mostly free to be accessed at any given time. I specially like the bottom being so free and exposed as that allows me to connect my charging cable without problems as well as leave the microphone of the phone exposed for better audio quality when making/receiving calls (yes, I do not have a BT enabled car :( ). Overall, this is a must buy item. I am ordering a second one for my wife's car since the one she has now is big, bulky and keeps falling off the dash. EDIT: Just a quick update on my review. I went on a trip and wanted to take the car mount with me, so I removed it from the base. I had to pry it from the base, it was really stuck in there. I did not end up using the holder so it was on my backpack the whole time. On my way back from the trip, I mounted it again on the car base. The next morning, I noticed that the holder had lost its suction... darn! I thought, this is going to be yet another one of those older holders. I tried several times to keep it in place and it would stay for about a day, then fall off. I decided to remove it from the base and take a closer look. The suction cup was covered in grime and crud picked up from my backpack (lint, dust, hair, etc) so I did what the instructions tell you to do: rinse the base with running water and let it air dry. So I did and put it back in the base once dry. It has been 3 days and the thing is back to rock solid status. I'd then suggest you get this if you don't plan to be taking it on and off constantly. It is hard to remove and if the base gets dirty the suction power will be lost. But as long as you clean it properly it will remain as strong as when originally bought!

Can't hold its own weight
By Charles W. on Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2014
tl;dr - Don't waste your time on this product, at least not anymore. This is what I thought when I bought my first two over a year ago: "The mount works great, and holds my OtterBox-ed iPhone 5 easily. The ball joint moves a bit when I try to push the phone in, but that may be because I haven't screwed the brace on tightly enough, so I won't hold it against the device. Have had no problems with the sticky suction mount. Keeps my phone at eye level so I can better check the GPS." This is what I think now: Over a year and a half later, the stickiness finally wore out on my two mounts, plus the armature broke on one, so I decided to get replacements. The first one to arrive had all the stickiness of a Post-It note (even after repeated hot water rinsing/drying like the instructions say, and could not even support its own weight, let along a phone. I thought, "Well, that's too bad, must be bad luck, because I really like these things, and I know they work well." I returned it about the same time the second arrived. As I was mounting the second one, a small plastic piece that connected the arm to the mount snapped, and I thought, "Wow, that stinks. That seems like an awfully thin piece to be holding this together." I returned it, and like a dummy, got a third one. Once it finally arrived, guess what? It couldn't support its own weight either; it would fall off within 5 minutes of mounting, again, even after rinsing, letting dry, and trying again. The construction on the newer ones was a little different than my previous models, which leads me to think the company changed manufacturers, and this new manufacturer is cutting corners. I have tried three times to contact the company, via email, Amazon and Aduro's own Contact Us form, and never once did I get a response. This is particularly funny considering I get form emails from them (through Amazon) telling me how much they value their customers and want feedback. Well, here's my feedback: "I loved your products that were made over a year ago, and I hate your products that were made recently. Whatever changes you made - unmake them, please."
