Great TV, Great Price, FAST delivery!

----SHIPPING---- Arrived in a day (!!!), in a HUGE outer box (too big, in fact) and the TV was inside its own box. There was sufficient protection, apparently as nothing was damaged in transit. ---PURCHASE------ This TV popped up as a Cyber Monday sale item so we hit "Buy" ASAP. Most of the reviews were good and so I was confident we'd be pleased. ---BACKGROUND---- We are not audio/ videophiles, have had only one TV in our house for many years (NO TV in the bedroom, ever). I am employed in a high tech field and am surrounded by gadgets and geeks. I did NOT want a Smart TV as we already have the various devices we want (A Smart DVD player, Roku, and Xfinity). With devices, the math is easy: Smart + Smart = Problems We wanted a 50" with a clear picture. (Yep, that's a period at the end. Everything else is distraction.) ---UNBOXING----- After cutting the yards of packing tape I slid the packing and supplemental material and then the TV out of the box with no problem. This 50" is actually the lightest TV we've had so far (our current LG is a 42", circa 2009?) The instructions are -- interesting. You'll need reading glasses. There were no instructions for installing the base (temporary until the wall mount arrives), but it was easy enough to figure out. Dropped the AAA batteries in the remote, placed the TV on the component box, hooked up the HDMI and Power, and turned it on. It stepped me through a setup menu and in a few minutes was ready to go. It defaults to TV component in so I had to switch to HDMI 1. Vila! Big, sharp, clear picture! I was very surprised at the sound quality -- VERY good internal sound. I turned the TV sound down and routed through our home theater set and it even sounded better. I am sure improved sound processing is the underlying improvement here. ----COMCAST CABLE----- I'm not sure about the Comcast complaints from other reviewers but we have Comcast Infinity and it seems fine. I flipped Roku on and it works. Haven't run a DVD but will soon. We watched a Hockey game last night and the picture was fantastic. I had to increase brightness a bit (all that white ice probably fools the internal circuitry) but otherwise it was a pleasure to watch the game. ---BOTTOM LINE---- We are VERY happy with the Samsung 50" LED TV! We've had it a day so long term reports will come later.

Slightly disappointed

I have the UN40EH5000 with the Samsung TS02 panel. I was amazed at how bad this HDTV looked with the stock settings. Ghosting and halo artifacts were clearly noticeable, along with a fairly severe motion blur. The construction quality also left a lot to be desired as there was a big gap between each HDMI jack and the back if the cabinet. Thankfully, the HDMI inputs work alright. My unit also leans slightly to the left side and doesn't seem particularly level. Turning the sharpness level from 50 down to 15 worked wonders as most of the ghosting and halo artifacts disappeared. But motion blur was still a huge problem for me. Searching online, I found several people having that exact same issue with the TS02 panel - so it's not just my unit. I've seen older 60hz refresh rate HDTVs that have a similar problem, but this Samsung seems particularly bad for a newer TV. And so I looked online for some calibration settings. I found one from someone on a videophile message board using some sort of a software program. This calibration (described below) worked for me. Fine details now come through, while the brightness and color performance seems much improved. Still, the motion blur is barely acceptable. If you're thinking of buying this HDTV for sports or action movies I'd definitely look elsewhere. Pros: Bright, sharp picture Excellent contrast (blacks are very black) Great color performance Good sound for a flat panel Analog audio out Cute remote Decent DTV OTA tuner Very energy efficient Cons: Fairly bad motion blur (don't buy if you plan on watching lots of sports) Whites are have a slightly blue tint Needs calibration Construction quality not the best My slightly modified calibration settings (with TS02 panel): Picture settings: Mode = Movie (bypasses 'dynamic backlight'). Backlight = 16. Contrast = 92. Brightness = 45. Sharpness = 15. Color = 55. Tint = 50/50. Advanced settings: Color Space = Auto. White Balance = R-Gain: 19, G-Gain: 39, B-Gain: 14. Gamma = -1. Dynamic Contrast = Off. Black Tone = Off. Flesh Tone = 0. Motion Lighting = Off. Picture options: Color Tone = Warm 1. Size = 16:9. Digital Noise Filter= Off. LED Motion Plus = Off.
