Best wireless media player for the money
By Reviewer on Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2013
I'm a tech junky and I researched so many media players and this was the best one under $100, actually I would say under $200 as well. The newer model has a Netflix button on the remote. If only it had Amazon Prime video streaming... Pros: can play almost any video format lie AVI, MP4, MKV, and a whole bunch of other complicated codecs. The first 3 are 90% of what I need and probably more than what most people need. 1TB built in hard drive. This is a big plus. Most other models within a few hundred dollars don't come with a hard drive. One of the biggest features is that it can also be a wireless network storage drive (like a mac time capsule $200+). Also, the price of a simple external TB hard drive is around the same price as the screenplay so this really is an insane value when you think of it. HDMI, component, composite out. Having it be backwards compatible is a plus since everyone is still phasing out standard def tvs. 4 usb ports! Ok well technically just 2 for flash drives. The other 2 are for the wireless dongle and pc connection, but 2 is enough. cons: No amazon streaming... yet? An update would be awesome IR (infrared) remote. This is the worst feature unfortunately. The remote has a keyboard and tons of buttons which seems nice but it's line of sight and the receiver is rather week. It is very hard, almost impossible, to type from accross the room. the slightest movement when typing will affect it reading the signal and letter. A simple bluetooth module that would cost pennies in manufacturing would solve this problem and make it a great system. But for the price I can't complain too much. The fan is large and can be annoying if left on or in quick start mode. I just turn the player off when not in use.

Sort of works... Sort of doesn't.

Browser feature is worthless. Do not let that factor into your decision. The settings that you can change are very limited, and offer little flexibility in the way your interface behaves. Most notably, changing the movie files from list view to gallery view: for one, despite the advertising telling you that you can do it, there is no way to add an icon or preview image to movie files (such as the DVD box cover). In the list view of file browsing, the movie begins to play in a preview window if you stop on the name. Again, there is NO WAY to prevent this from happening. Playback: I've never been able to make an MKV file play on this unit. I've tried a few, but now I won't even attempt it anymore. Many times a movie file (any kind) will play fine on your computer, but will have no sound when transferred to the media player. There are no support topics for this error. I don't use the player for photos, because despite what most companies think, I've never met anyone who wants a device like this to look at photos on their TV, including myself. The remote control is just dumb. The keyboard is useless because the browser is useless. You can use it to re-name files by navigating deep into the settings, but it takes a moment to do it from the computer, but minutes to do it thought the unit. Additionally, the 'delete' feature rarely works in-unit. The remote is almost impossible to use with on hand, only practice has made it possible, and it's still quite clunky and seems poorly planned. Seems like Iomega would have concentrated on making ONE feature work well instead of making several features work poorly, but alas, that is not the case with this player. I recommend something else.
