Cameras For A DIY Surveillance State

Remember the party last weekend? If you don't, there are 5,000 photographs detailing every moment. At the rate things are going, soon there will be more recordings of human activity than there are human activities.  Start immortalizing minutae with your own camera!

Cameras to capture all those embarrassing moments. By the way, I got one of those Bloggies back in August - it's pretty cool!

I'm just hanging out, really.

Dang it... Only one Lumix?!?

Looking for a good P&S (not POS) compact camera for times when we don't want to lug the DSLR around. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced (sub $200, preferrably sub $150) compact camera that takes nice pics? We've had Canons, Nikons, Casios in the past, and the Nikon (which we still have) takes horrible pics.

Thanks!

I had one of those Bloggie cameras until my father borrowed (and lost) it for a trip to Germany. It was quite nice although the computer software has a few limitations and was hard to use.

This Bell/Howell camera is a toy and not worth more than a dollar. Do not waste your money. I can't believe I fell for those slick woot descriptions again.

You are correct.

Steer clear of any camera that uses internal memory. Internal memory is powered by that battery and once the battery dies, your pictures go with it. Any serious camera will have external flash based memory (SD card, etc)

yolo!

The Canon T3 is a great entry level DSLR. The auto focus motors for Canon are found in the lens and not in the camera body. I think this sets Canon apart from others that have the motor in the camera body. If a problem occurs in the body type motors then all optics are useless until the body is repaired or replaced. With Canon, a motor problem would be limited to just that particular lens allowing full use of the camera with any other lens you may have. The image stabilization even in the lower end Canon optics is very good.

If you are thinking about moving up from Point and Shoot to DSLR, (Digital Single Lens Reflex) this Canon will give you many years of service and quality. I have been shooting Canon equipment for over 35 years and when I introduced my wife and then my daughter to SLR, it was Canon.

What is SLR or, Single Lens Reflex? Why is it called that and just what exactly does it do?

Anything by Bell n Howell is garbage. Serious bottom end, nothing could possibly be worth less kinda garbage.

I have that Lumix and I like it much better than the Nikon POS I bought just a couple months ago. I love Nikon DSLR's, but their point and shoot stuff is horrible. I've have a couple of Lumix/panasonics and they are always awesome- at least so far.

You are exactly right on "Bell and Howell" being junk. It really is a shame too. There was a time when that name rang of quality only. Schools all over the country used their projectors. When Canon was first coming to America, they were the USA outlet for the company and then instead of seeing the Canon name alone on the products in the USA it was, Bell and Howell Canon. Don't know what exactly happened but my guess is for one or many reasons the old company just went under but the name was scarfed up and is now only seen on really low-dollar and sub-standard products. Now that my curiosity is up, I may search the company to see just what did happen.

Edit:
Found a decent link to history of the company on Wikipedia. It may be of interest to some.
